Re: Shimano Alfine Hub 11-speed On A Trail Bike

I have an 8 on my fat bike and pulled it apart after 2 years of hard use (beaches, mud and general riding around the waitakeres) it was as clean as Viks.
I have an 11 on my gravel bike and I change the oil every year, always comes out clean. I'm running ATF in this hub.
I've also got a rohloff on my bike Friday.
They all work as advertised, if I was in the market to buy a new hub I'd get the alfine 8.

Appears a trail bike with internal geared hub are zero to build it yourself.
Seems nothing available off the shelf.

Avanti and the like surely must see an opportunity here ?

Shits expensive http://bikecycle.co.nz/bikes/mountain-b ... us-ac-650/ not exactly a lot of people are going to want and/or pay for that with a commuter build on it.
Rohloffs also have there own idiosyncracies(weight balance/grip shifter...) that means we are not really going to see them coming specced stock on bikes for a long time to come.

8 speeds dont have an oil bath so dont need a change/flush as such. 11 speeds do.
The 8 speeds are pretty bulletproof. 11s, not so much. Or rather, they're not as maintenance free as the 8s and more prone to failure. Although i have done the oil 'dunk' on the first wheel i had built up which made it spin a bit better.
Btw i have 3 8 speeds in the garage and they've been used for comuting, bike packing, and general trail riding. My wife has been using a surly karate monkey with alfine gears and recon fork. Almost sounds like what you're after. Its not for sale though. My xxix was but it is rigid.

Co-motion bikes offer a few bikes with rohloff hubs, available to order through anyone who deals surly or stans gear

Nothing in their lineup with suspension, but the rockshox paragon could be added as a solution

I'm a steel fan and I have a steel fatbike. But I'd get an alloy one next as I ride it on the beach alot, and its my winter bike.
