I blame it on South Park.

That and mental laziness. Which I blame on South Park.

The Devils Staircase is made easier by preparing with some running (if the race is big deal enough for you to do so). I've been running for a year now (not for 'poti training) and motored up Devils. Everyone seemed to be standing still.

No bike pushing either - Up across your back, not over the shoulder. Leaving the bike on the floor just means overcoming the resistance and pushing it over all sorts of bumps and rises.

Ride the inbetween bits to give a quick rest to your run muscles. There is a water station and easy ground at the top. No excuse not to smash your legs getting up it fast.

Just some thoughs. Davo

Another half litre would have been good (specially as you really need a fair bit of liquid with the squeezies.

I had about 1.3l of replace, 350ml of coke and approx 2 squeezies.

Then a million pieces of b&e slice after :) (Gav got heaps of left overs from the food tent)

Did you have digestion issues? Did you cramp? If not then no, you didn't need anymore. An extra 1/2 litre would just be extra to carry. Stu only took 500ml for the whole race and he did ok. Think I sucked down about 800ml, and two squeeze packs (one to empty it so I could cover the gash in my tyres sidewall).

The Australian Institute of sport terms it 'functional dehydration.' They have determined most can lose approx 2kg in fluid before performance drops significantly. So if you can arrive at Dopers 2kg lighter then all good.

Key is then to replace the lose's ASAP once you've finished

Hmmm. That's food for thought :eh:

I did have a few cramp issues in my calves (they were quite tight beforehand though). A bit of hand cramp on the Dopers downhill, but my quads/rest of my leg muscles were fine. I had a 2L bladder on my back but only drank half of that (Powerade). Couldn't reach my Leppin squeezy bottle in my back pocket very easily so ended up taking about a quarter up Devils and another quarter at the start of Dopers. If I do Karapoti again (and it's not a stinking HOT day...), I'll wear my smaller 1.5L Camelbak, which also has the added advantage of being smaller and sitting higher up my back for easier back pocket access :)

I feel like I probably would/should have drunk more though. I finished my 1.5L Camelbak at the Palmy North NI Cup round, which took just under 2 hours. Karapoti took me just under 4 hours, so .. hmm.. yeah? I dunno :eh:

No time for biking as i'm too busy. I've only ridden my bike about 6 or so times this year (including the nats and poti)

I run around 3 or more times a week. I usually run up over Tinakori Hill at lunchtime and try and do a bigger 2hr run at the weekend.

One day i'll find the time to get into swimming, then i'll try those Xterras. They look awesome!

I am about to start a new job on the other side of town from my daughter's school and husband's work - so training vs. school drop offs and pick ups is going to become a night mare. I am trying to work out how to fit in everything ... and by adding some running, and taking away some cycling over witner .... it just might all hang together, somehow.

thanks for that - makes me less afraid to swap it around a bit, for winter at least.
