SS - you're more likely to break a record ;)

I dunno, 2:40:56 is a pretty quick time on the Single Speed...and that isn't even by Garth W :0

Nick did about 2:50 a couple of weeks back on our training ride on his SS XTC :)

Stop spreading lies, it was more like a 3: 00.

Karapoti's not really a race which suits me. To much running (which is wierd as I used to be a runner)

I think the right sort of rider can go faster alone on that course. Did you guys start down the end of Karapoti Road? Even if you started at the top of the gorge, being able to ride your own pace throughout can be a huge benefit over a course like that, IF you don't get a huge boost from "racing" anyone other than yourself.

Yeah, we started down at the first bridge, down where the race starts/finishes. IMO going at your own pace is slower as you can fall into a "comfortable" rythym too easily and stop pushing as hard - for me personally anyway. The other factor on raceday I have been discussing with people is traffic. Depending on how I am riding nearer race day I will be changing class to get a better time.

From past experience, they dont seem to like people upgrading even a few weeks before the race, best to do it now.

Okies, will look into it - thanks for the heads up! ;)

or join the assorted freaks leaving right after the large doggies :p

I'm there already, looking for some company at the back of the whippets.

Good one - have you set a target yet? My mistake last year was sand bagging on the time. This year I want to drop 10% which puts me just under 3 hours.

I haven't set a target yet, but i figure under 6? No idea really until i ride it.

I did 4:45. I wasnt having a good day. I think, provided you have built sufficient endurance, you will go well under that. :)

The slightly unfair part of races like karapoti is the more unfit you are the longer you have to sustain the effort - for the big guns it's 2.5 hours flat out - my first time around the course in 2004 I was nearly dead last in 5:45ish....

And I will probably stick to riding mid-week rather than going out there with the Motor Bike crowd. And there is no way I am heading out there on a Public Holiday again, Waitangi Day last year was just un fking believable on dopers with all the 4 wheelers, 3 wheelers and 2 wheelers driven by absolute muppets for the most part.

Still all that CO might be good for the training, kind of like high altitude training I guess, pity about the brain cells.

Ben i will be up for joining you for a early AM sat ride or mid week at a hard pace, let me know when you are planning to ride ;)

Does anyone know if they give away a two pairs of forks for retro class, one for the men and one for the woman??

Not sure, last year they didn't but then there were no women in the event so who knows :p. I doubt it, because unlike M1929 vs F1929 there is only RETRO or S/SPEED with no way of specifying gender. That might have changed this year, didn't look since I am not riding the S/SPEED this time :)

FYI interestingly the guy who won RETRO last year rode at about the same pace as me off and on for a lot of the race rode with flats rather than toe clips (I was on my S/SPEED). I figure if you are confidant with toe clips they'd be the goer rather than the flats up those hills!
