Say Goodbye To The Sea-life Of The Bop

Postby Flyboy on Fri 7/Oct/11 7:16pm

Environmental Disaster in the making - and the general feeling in town is that the powers that be were - and still are - appearring to be doing so little about it.

Im persaonally just so pissed off that something like this has first of all happened in NZ, and secondly, that so little was done over the first two days. Mobilising the equipment today is just plain pathetic

Hate to say it but my first thought when it hit the news was "awesome, a new wreck to dive!"

:( :(

Had a couple of great dives out there on the Tioma.

Sounds like the government has really, really fucked up by not ensuring things were actually getting done to prevent disaster.

Although take some heart - the oiled wildlife response people/equipment is top class. Got to have a real good poke around it at Massey and it looks to be an awesome setup, and the people who are working in it have mad skillz. So at least somebody was prepared to do their fucking job.

Govt has been sitting back, letting the ship owners conduct their own salvage operation. While oil leaks into NZ waters.

Surely we learned our lessons watching the Gulf oil spill, and our Government wouldn't be so stupid as to rely on the shipping company involved to do the right thing.

it's a major f..up from the ship navigators for sure, but unfair to say the govt aren't doing anything.

All we can really say is no one is doing a Bob Parker in front of the cameras

I'm not voting for John Key until he learns how to wear rescue worker's clothes during emergencies.

Jerry looked quite fetching in fluoro orange, I believe he could be seen from space.

how the fuck, in this day and age, can a ship like that, in completely fine conditions, run into a reef that's been known about for a LONG time???? that's what i wanna know. its fucking ridiculous. its not like they dont have maps, charts, computer navigation, depth sounders etc etc. was the captain drunk (like Exxon Valdez dude)???? or what? HOW!??

My cousin posted this piece of info via teh Book of Farce

a little more info on Corexit - Corexit 9500 can cause central nervous system depression, nausea, and unconsciousness. It can cause liver, kidney damage, and red blood cell hemolysis with repeated or prolonged exposure through inhalation or ingestion. Corexit 9500 is four times as toxic as the oil itself. To “disperse” it means it will NEVER be cleaned up. It will just stay out there, polluting and poisoning the ocean, her inhabitants, and all the food we take from it.
