Yeah the Costa Concordia isn't looking to hot at the moment.
-The damage on the side of the vessel missed the stabilisers - they are still extended. They are retracted when it is slowing down or manouvering which meant it was at cruising speed when it hit.
-The damage is mid way along the hull missing the stabiser, so he had already turned sharply to miss the rock.
-The generators are mounted where the damage is, it is diesel electric, engines driving generators which power electric motors to drive it, which is quieter and used on a big boats. So when they failed they had no power at all.
-The listing was caused by them pumping water to balance the boat and opening the tanks, which is switched and operated from the bridge. They still don't know if the self induced listing was due to the hull damage and water coming in freezing the controls or them flicking the switch and fucking off.
-Costa are the only cruise ship operator who allow crew to join/leave mid journey.
