Mark Ford, Miriam Dean, John Waller, John Law and Wayne Walden will make up the Auckland Supercity "transition agency" - responsible for overseeing the restructuring of Auckland's eight existing city, district and regional councils into a single super council by October 31 next year.

Mark Ford will be Executive Chair of the group.

In many respects, Auckland is effectively governed by these people.

Potentially they are able to step in and alter any plans the current city councils have which don’t line up with their views on how the transition should be handled.

Mark Ford is chief executive of Auckland’s water wholesaler Watercare Services.

Water services throughout the region will be merged under the Supercity council and are tipped to be one of the most controversial and difficult pieces of the supercity planning.

John Waller is an accountant and Bank of New Zealand chairman.

Miriam Dean is a senior barrister.

Wayne Walden is a former TranzRail chairman.

John Law is a former mayor of Rodney.
