And it was all sorts of cyclists today except the more serious lycra dudes - most of them at least gave me the raised eyebrow.

And I know it's stupid to care but meh...
See - the lycra warriors see you as one of their own Oli  thats why they acknowledge you, the rest are just too afraid of your awesomeness to take their eyes off the road ahead. . . . . or sumfink.

I smile and/or wave at every cyclist coming the other way, and say morning/afternoon etc to all I overtake (which is very few these days). i am always pleasently surprised if i get a positive response at all. Expecting nothing from others (ie, being such a trendy cynic) has its benefits  the occasional response always lifts me up, rather than the continued non response bringing me down

Everyone down here in CHCH gives a wave and a hello.
I have even had random people turn around and ride with me just to have a chat.

You guys need to come down to the friendly island.

Maybe it is just this weekend. I caught up to a few and said hello. Got no response.....till I went past them. Seemed weird, maybe they didn't hear me but they did see me go past and got to watch me ride off into the distance.....after I 'let' them drag me up the small hill I caught them on :)

I am a waver though. Every cyclist I see I will wave to, and say gudday to if their going my way. It is just a friendly thing to do.

Plenty of smiles and chats at the Tour de Whitemans this morning (and primo weather) :)

It all started with a big laugh as riders were warned about using cell phones while cycling as this was now banned! With the exception of the Blue mountain road the pace was hot with the 100km winners came in at 2h.45min (For you PNPers Silas Cullen won :) After smaller bunches of the first 2 laps I got into a 20 person group on the third lap. We hit speeds on 45km/h plus through the valley. I finished with a time around the 3 hour mark.

Great feed afterwards as usual - a big cheers to the organisers (Lions/Rotary) for a great event and for turning on primo weather.

With 275km for the weekend (160km Taupo simulation yesterday) my legs are toasted. Now where's my beer?

Did the Tour de Whitemans, 100km.

This was my first group ride so took it easy. Found a nice bunch who took me around and showed me the ropes. Highlight was having a police escort towards the end of the final loop which made for a relaxing ride.

Have no idea what time I made as computer timing seems a bit off, I guess around 3:15-3:20.

yep, I'm another who waves or says 'morning' to everyone, roadie, flatbar, or mtb. feel a bit of a smartarse if you're blasting past them though.

approx 100km with the KCC, pram up to Manakau via Te horo, otaki beach, waipawa(?) beach, and back through Otaki and Te Horo. easy pace.

Did the Tour De manawatu :) 80k ride and Im very pleased with my result. 35th place and time of 2hrs 27. That's a personal best for that route by about 13-15minutes. Great day, awesome weather.

Set out with a game plan to get up the front for the start and stay with a lead bunch as long as I could. my plan was to make it to Ashhurst at least, but bugger me I stayed with them pretty much all the way to the Colyton Hill just before the turn to McKays line.

I rode the 23k back to finish pretty much on my own and just got head down bum up and went for it. Felt good to start catching the tail end of the bunch and go past them. Don't you just love that 'got my second wind' feeling!

I know 2.27 won't seem quick to many on here, but I can't get the smile of my face :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

PS: I always say hello, even to the road side goats and cattle!

4 the Aucklanders

St Heliers, Airport reverse with the group then peeled off at Manukau, Up Redoubt, Mill Rd, Alfriston, Clevedon, Twilight, Sandstone, then back onto the Airport route again in normal direction Onehunga mall , Newmarket and back along the waterfront as the last of the Maratoners were still finishing. beat my wife to the LBS where she was having a check on her bike fit. last hill was carrying my coffee so riding one handed. Interesting...!

130 when I got home. Peel off a 200 next weekend or the weekend after I think as I need to get a long one or 2 in again before taupo enduro.

Hill work this week again as I'm a bit slck there currently.

saying hello is a personal thing. i tend to give a nod or a flick of the hand as passsing. but tend to find it 50/50 if i get a response. ironically enough i got called a snob behind my back this morning. was out doing the hills around the inlet and pinning it down moonshine, got stuck behind a couple of mtbers + truck.. gave a general nod and then focused on trying out sprint the truck over the rollers.. but i heard the snob call! you can't please everyone. :D

Town - haywards - paekak - akas - dowse drive - town - bays - home.

Dunno why, felt pretty decent this morning, so decided to do a "fast" Akas loop. Not much wind today which was a bonus. Smashed out along the motorway, and by the time I got to Paekak it seemed everyone was out - I would have seen around 80 cyclists between Battle Hill and the summit. Kept the pace through to Waikanae, staying around 42 - 43 almost the whole way. Primo. Had a quick bite to eat along the flat/straight road just out of Waikanae before getting back into it. Timed the climb up the Akas, in 17:10. Saw Sifter out for a blat just near Karapoti too. At the Akatarawa saddle my average speed for the ride was 33.8kmh, so I stayed on it to try and get it up to 35 by the time I got to Lower Hutt. When I turned off at Dowse Drive average for the 121km was 34.8 - close! Had a quick gasbag to the folk racing in the PNP race, got abused by the same pnp official as at the mt vic race, then carried on. Steamed back into town, refilled a bottle at work and carried on round the bays.

Pretty pleased to be feeling relatively strong at the moment. 202km all up (only half of what I did last Saturday! ) and I did the whole ride in the 53T too, just for added fun, although Dowse Drive sucked a bit. :D

Hang on, I thought it was just cellphones / communication devices. Does it include all handheld devices? if so....bugger!
I carry a camera with me pretty much all the time I am riding.

Round inlet and up Paekak Hill and home this evening, alittle windy out there :( Towed a mate the whole way round and up. He had to stop for a refuel at Pauatahnui as he was on the rivet. Which was great for me as I thought i was going o.k but not great, but better than I thought :)
