you can get all the way to the ranger station on seal (avoid dyers road) - we just need to convince the council to seal the 4wd up beside gums and we'll simultaneously solve the traffic issues on dyers with roadies, and weed out all the mamils with dodgy tickers (maybe put a defib up there :D )

A bit annoyed today driving in to town. Caught the tailenders of "Worlds" Passed about 10cyclists. All good. Then got stuck behind this one woman on top of the hill heading towards Gov's Hotel. Didn't worry me at all and just waited behind, but what did worry me was after the corners down the bottom she decides to ride out in the middle of the lane 300m before the turnoff to Lyttelton, which made it nearly impossible to get past when there was heaps of room for both of us. Worst arrogant piece of obstructive riding I've seen for awhile :angry:

actually she's merely doing exactly what I do there - I've had too many mongs in cars go ripping by (trying to get up speed for the hill?) going thru there, so I tend to take the lane early before the turnoff so I don't get carved up

more to the point it's downhill all the way to the turn - so how was she only doing 40km/h - and what speed were you doing (it's a 50km/h zone right thru there)

Just because she should be doing more than 40kph doesn't mean she was.

So riding two abreast on dyers pass road is reasonable in your opinion?

They were not passing unless it takes >>>500m for one roadie to pass another

Ditto, I'll use my share of the lane to stop someone making that dash to get past when 15 seconds of their time means the rest of my life. Sorry but "I" decided what's safe for me not what 'works for 'you'. even the road code backs us up in this.

"If the road is too narrow to safely allow vehicles to pass, you are in danger of being run off the road or hit by a passing car. In this situation it is acceptable to move further out into the path of traffic to prevent other users from passing you. If you do have to move further out, remember to find a gap, signal your intentions and move across when it is safe. Once you have moved out try to ride as quickly as you can and allow the following traffic to pass when the road widens."

No just saying that's "in your opinion". We are allowed them.

and as I and you don't know for a fact we can only have an opinion "A"?

Well I live right by these roads literally, and I cycle down there all the time(2/3times a week), and I never ride like that, ever. Often I will slow down and even stop on the side of the road before turning into Lyttelton when on my bike, if cars are behind me as its impossible to know which way they're intending to go(slowing down for the turnoff, or going straight ahead, and what type of drivers they are). If I have enough space and go early(hardly ever) then I will ride close to the centreline so cars can go past on the left. I value my life more than making some sort of petty little point. See I think this is the problem =}

...so you treat all people in cars like the enemy? And purposely get in their way as long as possible ? :blink:

Its actually quite flat there, and not easy for an average rider to go over 50kph after they've wiped off a bit of speed around the corners! She was doing 40kph and we were the only 2 vehicles on the road. The new drainage system they've put in there has widened the road considerably on the left by a good couple of metres. Plenty of room for both of us especially with no other people on the road. All the other "normal" cyclists seem to ride on the left there, until they need to cross the lane when it is safe to do so. Riding in the middle of the lane is not their default position. Why? Because most cyclists don't ride at or over the speed limit down there, and aren't that stupid IMO!
I still would have passed her over the centreline as being one(cyclist, not a centreline :lol: ), I always give cyclists lots of room. She took the lane on the last shallow corner which is fair enough, but when safely past it she stayed there. She didn't move to the left or the right. She was being purposely obstructive. This is what pissed me off. Plain and simple stupid, arrogant riding IMO.

Sure there are a lot of idiot drivers who speed to work at ridiculous speeds in their "performance" vehicles (My diesil Van doesn't quite cut it :( ). Most of whom would have cut her off at the first blind corner at the top of the hill in question. Not waited patiently the whole way down, like I did, and always do to every rider. I've just never been behind a cyclist in all the years of driving into town who acted like that. If she was a stronger rider she could have probably got away with it( hence my point about how "you're not that fast"), but she wasn't. Even though I was pissed off, I didn't give her the "evils", yell abuse or honk the horn when I went past either. I did look in my rear view to see her grinning like a "cheshire cat" obviously very pleased at herself of unneccesarily pissing off yet another evil car driver. Dick!

Lycra Larry I disagree with your assertion that the road there is too narrow(since they've widened it), so IMO your point about the roadcode is invalid. If you think riding in the middle of the road 10kph slower than the speedlimit on a straight clear piece of road 2 or 300m before a turnoff on a bike makes it safer for you, or is somehow supported in the roadcode, then you're sadly mistaken IMO. Can't see how this type of riding "works" for anyone. :rolleyes: But each to his/her own...

clearly you misunderstood the part above when I didn't actually say the road is to narrow. Indeed made no reference to that piece of roads width. In fact stated above I don't even know the road. How ever I do feel that to often others feel the need to make a statement on behalf of others. Only pointing out that when in front they have right of way and they are in the best position to decide what's safe for them, and not the person sitting 20m behind them in a vehicle. There are road surface issues that effect a cyclist differently to a motorist. So IMHO my quoting of the road code is the only valid statement to make. Same as if the motorist is in front of the cyclist then its the motorists place to be making the choices. Again IMO
