Road Safety Campaigner Left For Dead After Hit And Run.

Postby Roma on Sat 16/Aug/08 3:11pm

Northland road safety campaigner Fred Ogle was killed this morning in a hit and run west of Whangarei. It is a tragedy that someone who put so much into road safety has lost their life in such and senseless and callous way.The New Zealand cycling community's thoughts are with his friends and family.

Here is a link to a story about some of Fred's work: http://www.stuff.co.nz/northland/4634002a1927.html

http://www.stuff.co.nz/4658600a11.html wrote:Police in Northland are hunting for the driver of a vehicle who failed to stop after striking and killing a cyclist this morning.

Northland road policing manager Inspector Clifford Paxton said the cyclist died on State Highway 14 near Maungatapere, west of Whangarei, at about 9.20am.

"The vehicle involved has failed to remain and Whangarei police are wanting to locate this vehicle," Mr Paxton said.

He said it appeared both the cyclist and the vehicle were heading in an easterly direction.

Mr Paxton said police wanted to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the crash or knew of a vehicle that may have been involved.

He said the vehicle was likely to have damage to its frontal area and possibly the windscreen.

That sucks so much. Who knows, maybe the cyclist would have lived if he/she had gotten immediate help. :( :( :( :(

They've named the cyclist as Fred Ogle, a road safety campaigner in Northland :(

I have added some more information and a photo of Fred and will put this on the homepage.

My thoughts are with Fred's family and friends :(

Crap :(

I used to ride that road twice a day on my commute. A loss for for the Whangarei riding community, and the Whangarei community in general :(

My heart goes out to Freds family,it is sad that he has died for something he is passionate about,I was reading how he did the round the lakes challange many times and promoted road safety,It pisses me off that councils and government waste money on dumb ads on tv to stop speeding and wasting money on stadiums, museums and auckland viaduct, whangarei town basin and all the other shit when they should spend it on the roads that we use.I hope the cops catch them and a good sentence is handed down.
