Riding In Tekapo

Postby dh_winner on Sun 14th Mar 11:30am

Does anyone know of any riding near Tekapo? Im thinking of taking a bit of a holiday there and wondering if it was worth taking the bikes.

Went there a few years back.. Not much really. You can bike up/down Mt John.
Depends what bike you have? If you have a jump bike take it, there is always stuff around.
This picture was at one of the hydro dams close by if you are that X-treme

Go have a talk to the guy who runs the camping ground, last time I was there he pointed me in the direction of at least one short but fun track.

Theres an area in the forest (Cowans hill?) to play in, head across the bridge from the main part of town and turn right up the steep climb into the forest.

Or there's a track to the river from the main road to burkes pass,

Doesn't sound too thrilling though.

So in summary, not a lot really

There is a track back to town that is accessed from the Round Hill ski field access road. Have not ridden it, but I dont think it is too hard out... Couple of hours or so if you ride it as a loop??

Plenty of high country style riding up the Godley etc if you are into 4wd tracks on valley floors with magnificent scenary...

The last bit of the Two Thumbs section of Te Araroa is marked as Mountain bike as well?

Perhaps it would be worthwhile heading south for the day and doing the Ahuriri Valley. - just south of Omarama.

The Godley and Macauley rivers at the top of Tekapo have very similar riding and are a fair bit closer...

I've done the Richmond Trail, which starts just below Round Hill Ski Area, on the access road. Undulating along under the Two Thumb range before dropping down to the lake. Then you have to ride back up to the car, which isn't too bad. Nice ride, fantastic scenery.
Rode it with the wife and took about 3 hours?

+1 for mount john. not a bad grunt up, and reasonably fun descent. head round the lake (past the new iceskating place) and up the walking track. there are several ups that are as steep and long as the Body Bag on Worsleys (if you know it?). there's good coffee at the top tho. then we bombed back down the way we'd come. tho, i've heard you can do the switchbacky track straight down the forested face to the skaterink... watch for walkers tho.
and +1 for just cruising about, jumping off stuff, and finding whatever snippets of singletrack you can. the times i've stayed there and happened to have my bike (travelling to and from better biking localities) have just played about a bunch...
