Results: Round 1, North Island Xc Cup

Postby HamishS on Sun 4/Jan/09 8:32pm

Results for North Island Cross Country Cup race 1, held in Rotorua on the 5th of January.

Mike Northcott of Tokoroa won the Elite Mens category at the first round of the RaboPlus NZ Mountain Bike Cups presented by Nature Valley today by a bike length, sprinting to cross the line just before Stuart Houltham (Lower Hutt) who placed second. Northcott and Houltham raced strongly alongside local rider and international road cycling talent and Classics specialist Clinton Avery who crashed on a treacherously slippery descent just 2km from the end of the race when leading by 20 seconds.

Rotorua’s Annika Smail took the title for the Women’s Elite category, winning the race by a large margin in a comprehensive display. Monique Avery (Rotorua) in her first year as an Elite rider placed second with a strong ride, with Nicole Swain (Lower Hutt) placing third.

The course situated in the Whakarewarewa Forest contained a mix of singletrack, fire roads and technically testing sections including a 300m climb per lap and was highly enjoyed by riders. The winner of the Pro Elite Men category – Mike Northcott said ‘the course was awesome, fast and flowy’. The rain came beating down during the last lap of the elite riders race but was no hinderance to those wanting to take the win “the rain slowed us down a bit but we just pulled back a bit and rode with more cautionâ€

I hope Bushlove was thanked on the podium.

Anyway, to all Wellington based racers. Top marks for results and placings.

Hopefully I can get the results corrected though. I stuck it out in a pretty wretched state to get some series points, and got listed as a DNF anyway :(

Congrats to teh bush love racing!

...And I'm still sure you can ride hot x buns without brakes damnit.

Contact Hamish Seaton or BikeNZ Connor - are you sure you weren't 80%'ed? I wasn't aware of any Elite's being pulled, but can't be sure as it would have been a Comm decision.

Apologies to Connor for missing his last lap off the results. I printed the results just before he came in so we could get ready for prizegiving, and didn't update them afterwards. Have corrected the results above. Sorry. H

Won't be a problem in future rounds as Connor will be going for the no brakes routine in Mt Vic...

...which will probably end in death!

I think those photos are from the race in December for the mid-North Island race.
