Got no problem with Jezza being the fat controller, as long as everything gets vetted by a panel of architects/urban designers/heritage dudes.

If the council tried to do it themselves under standard practice it would take a fecking age to get anywhere. Also runs the risk of them having a heavy influence on design/planning which could end up something like option 2 of the pole.

But the major issue is if Gerry tries to do it all himself, in which case the CBD would most likely become a giant PF Changs

Henderson may have some good ideas & vision, but his business practices leave a lot to be desired. Chch rebuild will be best served by a collaboration of equal parts visionary, creative & practical peeples who can leave their ego's at the door. So ... that probably counts out most polititians, high profile architects, blinkered thinkers & those who clamour endlessly for community consultation (which has it's place, but has an endpoint in "ya can't please all the people all the time")

Much of chch was already a low rent shopping mall stripped of any character. And the bits that did have character just fell down.

As far as re-establishing essential services goes, new sewage/phone/power infrastructure etc I reckon the "zero consultation get it done ASAP" model is about right. Not so sure that should also apply to the design of public spaces/buildings.

Didn't the CCC already hire the architects that redid the wellington waterfront? That turned out pretty well IMO.

j2hyde's distinction between stuff that pretty well everyone will agree just needs to be done with as much urgency as possible and public space/buildings is a good one. Govt is intending to give Gerry the power to suspend virtually any law for a period of 5 years. Well that can't be necessary. How about take a stab at what reasonably needs to be set aside to do the urgent stuff right now, and if it turns out that isn't enough come back when required?
