It is where the bike shop grind, smooth, clean up the faces and threads of the BB shell, this to get the faces parallel and the threads clear of any obstructions. If the threads are not cleared, then it might be a mega Bi*ch to fit the BB and it would more likely fell like cr*p when used. The facing might not be an issue, it all depends on if you are going to use an external cup BB ( where the BB cups sit up against the frame) or a cartridge type BB. (where the BB sits inside of the frame)

Definatly learn something new everyday, thanks for that info Jim.

As it turns out one of the first things i did yesterday after getting the frame home was fit the BB i had, i'll still take it in to the LBS to get sorted though and if it turns out to be the wrong sizing i'll just have to put it down to experience.

At the moment i've got some stuff going on with work, changing jobs etc etc so the bike might have to take a back seat before i proceed any further with getting it finished which is going to be incredibly hard because as i've mentioned before i've got little to no patience

Honestly... I'd ditch it (but definitely keep the front brake). Your back brake only contributes to 20-25% of braking force, so it's hardly needed even on a freewheeling bike. My fix has a front brake only, and it's sweet for general commuting, and everything else... including bombing hills!

What happens if a car suddenly stops in front of you and you don't have the 20-25% of rear brake ?????

free wheelin i'd run a rear brake, good for feathering mid corner to adjust speed etc

I can see where your coming from but at this stage i'll leave it and see how i go, and if i'm gonna have a freewheel as well might pay to keep it as shmoodiver and UK_Exile have pointed out...

Rear brakes are over rated.

Rear brakes are render useless when 100% the weight transfer and braking force is applied to the front. This 2 wheeled example can also be applied to bicycles, ever notice if you brake hard enough (straight line) all the weight transfers to the front wheel and the rear wheel just locks ups providing minimal braking from the rear.
But for braking while turning a combined use of rear & front brakes will offer more controlled braking.

Just out of interest and boredom with not enough work to do and a few people asking me, what would be a realistic value of this bike in its current state vs. finished with half decent wheels and crank etc?

I'm not looking at selling it, just had a few people ask this question over the past few weeks. At the moment im happy with it sitting in the lounge, find it more interesting than whats on tv anyway haha.

On another note i have got a new job in Auckland (Grey Lynn to be exact) starting on the 27th Sept. Who is a good LBS to go to? i need to get a few things sorted on my mtb, and when i get round to sorting out the rest of this bike will need to take it to someone...

Oh yeah also need to find a place to live so if you know of anyone looking for a flatmate let me know.....

Check Tardme... that aught to give you a reasonable idea of what it'd be worth. Beware that you'll never get back what you've spent on it.
