Sounds like cleaning the hubs out and packing some new balls in fresh grease will get you rolling. Check the bottom bracket and headset bearings, the brake pads and the cables and you're sorted...

Cheers Oli will look at doing that in the next week or so....

Looks like you're doing a great job! I'd also suggest once you've cleaned the frame giving it a coat or two of car polish.

The pissed chainwheels are Shimano's infamous Biopace chainrings, designed to smooth out the dead spot in pedaling... :D

I bought a bike in 1992 with biopace. Nice bike, but I hated the biopace. I thought there was discussion during TdF commentary that some riders have a modern variant of the biopace concept with ovoid chainrings - do you know if Shimano or Campag have reintroduced this concept?

... there was nothing about it in the rulebook

Shimano and Campagnolo don't do "oval" chainrings, but Rotor and O-Symetrics among others make them. By most accounts the riders using them (I know a few Elites who do) feel they are a definite benefit, although I don't think there are any definitive studies yet. Most of the Cervelo Test Team were using Rotor rings in the Tour, and other riders from various Teams were using disguised variants.

yes, the crank should be a standard 130mm BCD fiting for the chainrings

If you do want to refit them, there's an orientation tab on the rings that lines up with the crank. I can see the one on the inner ring at the top in your picture. The outer ring might have a pin at the same point that points towards the crank, to stop the chain getting between the rings and crank.

Having said that, I'd change them.

Disassembled the headset today. All the bearing races look good, just in dire need of some new grease. I'll get to this at some stage during the week.

Also noticed this once the stem was out, it would explain why it took a little bit more effort than i thought....
