Looks a bit too serious for me. As per question nine, would perhaps consider it if I were riding through a very polluted area every day

20) Are you familiar with any other type of PPE product for respiratory protection?
No

It would take a lot of dust/pollution before I'd wear one, but dislike #3 greatly, and #1 looks like a MTB/downhiller style. #2&4 are a little 'angry' but that's my style, so the one I'd pick :)
20) Are you familiar with any other type of PPE product for respiratory protection?
previously done painting/paperhanging and spent many, many months with dust masks or filtered respirators attached. Hated them then, hate them now, by my lungs thank me for having used them at all. Needs to be washable, or cheap and disposable.

1) What Country/City do you live in?
Auckland.

2) What Nationality are you?
New Zealander.

3) What age group are you from?
Erm... depends on what groups you meant?... but I'm 25.

4) What is your occupation?
Civil servant/evil bureaucrat.

5) How long have you bicycle commuted for?
Coming up to 5 and a half years now.

6) How long do you ride for at any one time when commuting?
About half an hour tops on most days, sometimes stretching out to an hour depending upon the route I take.

7) How would you describe the environments you commute through?
Mostly fairly busy streets - I'd say only about 20% of my commuting is in seriously grimy urban streets (Auckland CBD, Albert Street = bus central...)

8) Does exposure to 'particle' air pollution concern you? (e.g. road dust etc.)
A bit of a worry, but as I say, only part of my overall ride so it's not so bad. Other safety issues are a bigger concern for me.

9) Does exposure to 'vapours/gases concern you? (e.g. Carbon Monoxide)
See above.

10) Have you seen anyone wearing a PPE product to aid respiratory protection when bicycle commuting?
Only when I've been in China... if I rode there all the time though I definitely would too!

11) What products do you wear on your head/face/mouth when bicycle commuting?
Just a helmet.

12) Have you ever worn a mouth guard (For cycling or other), what was your reason for doing so? and how did it make you feel?
I wore a mouthguard for junior rugby at primary school, because I got told I had to, and I didn't feel particularly happy about it.

13) Do you listen to music when bicycle commuting?
Nope. I want all of my senses available to detect hazards when on a bike and definitely wouldn't want to impair my hearing when on the road.

14) <irrelevant, see above>

16) Are you concerned with your visibility when bicycle commuting?
Yes - probably the single biggest thing that keeps me safe when riding.

17) If any, what products do you wear to aid visibility?
I have a hideous fluoro vest which I wear daily even though it looks like crap. Apart from that, light coloured clothing wherever possible, and making eye contact/hand signalling (with all fingers mind you!) to other road users.

18) What are your concerns and anxieties when bicycle commuting?
Being hit is the obvious anxiety, which is why I put stress on visibility. Air pollution - not so much, although if I rode more I might consider it.

19) How do you feel (like or dislike) about the PPE products shown below?
Two main things across all of these:
- The looks. Apart from the weird surgical-looking one, these all look really aggressive - which I think counts against you safety-wise in an urban environment - where possible you want to look non-threatening and visibly human so that people take more care around you. (Hippy stuff I know but I do think there's something to it)
- Ventilation. I'd be worried about getting enough air when charging hard in any of these products - they look like they'd get really hot and it'd be like breathing through a straw - which I guess is the problem with PPE gear for cycling - it's a challenge getting high airflow without losing the protection which is the whole point.

20) Are you familiar with any other type of PPE product for respiratory protection?
Yup, have worn big vented masks for painting and some bloody horrible foam disposable dust masks as well. Would only wear them if I felt I really had to.

19) How do you feel (like or dislike) about the PPE products shown below? (e.g. aesthetics - material, colour, design, function, affordability) Not sure how hot and sweaty they get when cycling hard. Would give them a trial. How do you cope with a drippy nose wearing one of those!!

20) Are you familiar with any other type of PPE product for respiratory protection? Yes dust masks which I have found itchy, stuffy to breath and not really very comfortable.

Erika wrote:1) What Country/City do you live in?
Christchurch, New Zealand. (Commute from New Brighton to Papanui)

2) What Nationality are you?
New Zealander

3) What age group are you from?
I'm 23

4) What is your occupation?
Currently I work part time as a cleaner

5) How long have you bicycle commuted for?
On and off (large gaps) for a few years, only in the last fourish months without fail through.

6) How long do you ride for at any one time when commuting?
12km, 40min. With an aim to cut that down, through it's not a race.

7) How would you describe the environments you commute through? (e.g. clean air/countryside or dusty roads/countryside or clean air/city or City smog).
I have 2 main routes I take to/from work, a suburb route that's not so bad and a route past a lot of paddocks that often reeks. When the latter route is good it's no better than the suburbs, but it is alongside a busy road so..
I commute during the day but at night time the air in the suburbs is often quite smokey in winter (the cats often come inside reeking of smoke).

8) Does exposure to 'particle' air pollution concern you? (e.g. road dust etc.)
Nose hair should deal with that, however it can get in my eyes.

9) Does exposure to 'vapours/gases concern you? (e.g. Carbon Monoxide)
Maybe in really built up traffic like in town, but I don't go that way. (I'm not usually cycling at peak traffic times)

10) Have you seen anyone wearing a PPE product to aid respiratory protection when bicycle commuting?
no. Wait, maybe? Certainly not recently.

11) What products do you wear on your head/face/mouth when bicycle commuting? (e.g. Helmet, sunglasses, any form of head/face warmer, mouth guard etc)
A helmet and a buff. I usually wear the buff as a helmet liner, but can wear it as a balaclava or mask. On rare occasions glasses, they usually make it harder to see and still don't cut glare.

12) Have you ever worn a mouth guard (For cycling or other), what was your reason for doing so? and how did it make you feel? (e.g. uncomfortable, protected)
Once, when some paddocks really stunk I stopped and made my buff into a mask. It was.. different, but mostly I was relieved.

13) Do you listen to music when bicycle commuting?
Used to, broke my nose and my handlebars and my saddle so...

14) If so, what sort of headphones/method do you use for sound transfer?
I'd rather just talk to myself, or check out the joggers (mmmm, spandex)

16) Are you concerned with your visibility when bicycle commuting?
Somewhat, and i like hi vis gear :)

17) If any, what products do you wear to aid visibility? (e.g. reflective/ florescent clothing or products).
I have a fluro vest, fluro socks (which can't usually be seen), and reflective tape. I've put that tape sparingly on my helmet, frame, and wheels to aid visibility at night, but I think it also helps a little in the daytime. Or blinds people, either way :)

18) What are your concerns and anxieties when bicycle commuting? (e.g. visibility, air pollution, accidents with cars etc.)
Flats, visibility. Dust in the eyes and glare. Roundabouts are 'fun' too, being a fat slow bastard and all.

19) How do you feel (like or dislike) about the PPE products shown below? (e.g. aesthetics - material, colour, design, function, affordability)
They look nice, don't know if they'd fit over my beard. Frankly I wouldn't bother with them.

20) Are you familiar with any other type of PPE product for respiratory protection?
Only 'builders' type stuff, nothing that would be comfortable for cycling.

Further comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated...
