Proposed 500m Long Pump Track For Napier

Postby Hawkesbaymtb on Fri 4/Apr/14 4:42pm

A pump track could be the icing on the cake for Napier’s Marine Parade, with Napier City Council releasing plans today for the proposed active recreation facility for public consultation.

The proposed pump track would be located at the southern end of Marine Parade, opposite Ellison Street, and would complement the Napier Skate Park, Reef Garden and Amphitheatre already in the pipeline.

A pump track is a circuit of rollers, berms and jumps that loops back on itself allowing the rider to continuously ride it, without pedalling. The proposed track, designed by Jeff Carter of Rotorua’s SouthStar Trails, will cover an area of 60 metres long by 30 metres wide and will consist of 500 metres of continuous track.

Napier City Councillor and Chair of the former Marine Parade Development Group, Keith Price says the full-size pump track will replace the current junior pump track (built by HBMTBC in 2009) and will cater for a much wider range of skills, abilities and ages.

“The basic goal of a pump track, besides having fun, is for the rider to learn how to “pump” their arms to maintain speed without pedalling at all,” Mr Price says.
Should the community support the initiative, funding and tender options will be considered immediately and construction of the track could begin as early as June.

Public are invited to complete the survey about the proposed pump track at (keyword #bmxpump).
This survey closes on Monday 28th April, 2014.

*PLEASE COMPLETE THIS SURVEY - If there's enough support then this will go ahead.
