Potential Climbs For The Akl Road Hill Climb Leaderboard.

Postby Chickenman on Sun 17/Jan/10 1:47pm

Ok so here are a list of climbs that could work for the leader board. As I make map my ride profiles for them, I'll update them.

Also if anybody thinks of other climbs that could work post here and I'll update this post.

Also list any start and finish points for climbs that aren't obvious.

I have also selected climbs that don't need to cross over through traffic. There'd be nothing worse than being on a hot run, only to have a car stop proceedings.

Mountain Road to Scenic Drive (a given really)

Te Henga to Scenic Drive (quarry)

Piha Road (a good climb, but may be a little busy?)

KareKare Road (from the one lane bridge to Piha road?) Good steep climb with some 20% pinches

Huia Road (I've never done it but have had it suggested to me)

Motutara Road (The main road in and out of Muriwai Beach; purely self interest I ride it every time I ride my bike :D but if nobody else wants it that's fine to)

Te Aute Ridge road (from the fire station to the gravel road)

Swanson/Scenic drive (similar to the Avanti climb, but not going to the mast which has lots of flatter and decendy bits, but to the top of the first rise about a km or so past the Quarry climb)

And for climbs not Waitak based

Mt Eden (from Mt Eden Road, to the car park)

Monument (in the Hunuas)

Moumoukai (Hunuas) Can somebody post a map my ride link for these 2?

EDIT!!
Sandstone

Twilight (quite short though so might not fit the original criteria of 5mins

Hunua Road

For those in East Auckland there is Sandstone Rd, Twilight Rd (quite short though), and Hunua Rd

I had thought about Twilight Road, but thought it may be too short.

As I'd said earlier who-else-auckland-wants-hillclimb-leaderboard-road-t103597.html I haven't done a lot of road here up until very recently, and live out west. So any help on the Hunua's is appreciated.

And we could look at two leaderboards for the different areas.

GRRR editing the poll reset the poll (makes sense I guess ) So those that voted can I get you to revote please

So for any climbs that need to be 'added', just post a yes please, and I'll keep a manual tally when I total them later in the week.

:) You’ve got a good list to choose from.

Bald Hill at Mauku would be good too as its used by CM club yearly.
Start could be near the main road and there is a finish line painted on the road just after the crest of the hill.

"Swanson/Scenic drive (similar to the Avanti climb, but not going to the mast which has lots of flatter and decendy bits, but to the top of the first rise about a km or so past the Quarry climb)" - say finishing at a house letterbox about 150m after the sharp left hand corner on the way up.

Piha - apart from Halan the rest of us value our lives and don't ride out there

I'd add Ponga Rd coming from the Drury side - climb starts at Coal Mine Rd.

I'd have to figure out where to end it though as I can't remember any landmarks except the tennis court on the other side of the road, however before you get there there is a bit of a descent followed by more climbing.

Anyway, its about 3-4k long, some nice steep pinches.

:) Those North Shore-ish ones are worthy additions.

Cheers for your input.

However as has been pointed out many times, Auckland has a number of different ranges to climb on. Unlike CHCH for example where there is only one range and only 10 or so climbs that are suitable, up here 20 odd have been mooted.

The Wellington leaderboard only has one or two climbs on it.

I unlike yourself it would seem I am trying to make the leaderboard up here a community based affair.

Cheers for the help.

I hadn't considered South or North!

It currently looks like I'll be setting an East and West board. If we can come up with a few more for South and North, I'll start one up for those areas too.

Simply because not everybody rides every area. For me personally, I'd be West and North. I'd have to ride 100km just to get to the Hunas!

Ha. Have you tried riding up the steep hill on the road going beside the zoo up and up toward Grey Lynn? I keep meaning to but I suspect it will be a fail!
