Tubes - Are They All Crap?!

Postby FLATULENTFRIEND on Fri 6/Jan/12 11:04am

I’m having a run of tubes that keep failing :(

All the ones I bought from a certain can’t name shop – they keep getting random pin holes in them (not caused by glass or anything).

My other (older sure) tubes seem to be failing at the valve so unfixable.

I only put 100 psi in them.

Other brands to buy?
Are the 1.2mm thick ones worthwhile?

Are you sure there's not something stuck in your tyre or rim that's holing the new tubes? I went through 3 tubes on my bike before I found the pointy bit stuck in the tyre casing that I couldn't see from the outside.

A good reason for lining the tyre brand label up with the valve, so when you get 3 tubes with holes in the same place you know where to look on the tyre for what's causing it.

Good (sharp) point but the little holes seem to be in random places (on two bikes).
I always line up the brand name to the valve hole - makes the valve easier to find.

Have you managed to annoy someone and they keep going past your bikes with a pin? :eh:

I have some el cheapo mtb tubes from them. Seem fine and stay inflated for me.

In my commuter I use either CST or conti tubes and don't seem to have any issues (other than the locals throwing glass and other stuff on the road) When I worked in a bike shop we sold many many CST tubes and also the Vittoria tubes and had very few issues

Pin holes sound like a production failure

Make sure that your valve holes are nice and clean and free of burrs, and also ensure that you have a good rim strip without any rough edges on the join (often at the valve hole)

Just because something has a name doesn't mean it is OK to say it.

Kenda tubes are terrible, CST tubes good, and the T7 tubes I had ... They were actually pretty decent too.

Yeah, how come those splits are always on the inside? There is no sign of rubbing but I get the impression the transition from tyre to rim tape may be involved.

Some batches of cheapo tubes just seem to be weak and easy to rip.

That's both obscenely historical, AND obscenely inaccurate. Well done

Apart perhaps from the very cheapest, shittiest tubes there is no way a tube will puncture without a reason. Check your rim, rimstrip and/or tyre thoroughly.
