Dunno what Nelson roadie climbing will be like but suspect that the climbs will be main routes rather than recreational routes and therefore full of pesky motorists...

Plenty of rural roads and alternate routes mean that unless you specifically want to ride to Blenheim or Takaka on a busy day, within 10 minutes you can be on a road ride with less traffic than most in Christchurch, with climbs galore. You will be gutted if you like riding in the wind for many km in a straight line on flats/false flats though :D
