It is a short ‘sprint’ distance event and will be an excellent kick-start into summer and opportunity to try something different.

Formerly known as the Porirua Pic N' Mix, participants complete the race disciplines in whatever order they want. The only race in New Zealand that allows you to tailor the challenge to your strengths, and the favourite race of the late Tom Ehlen.

In 2003 the Porirua Pic N' Mix was renamed the Tom Ehlen Memorial following the loss of talented Wellington multisporter Tom Ehlen to cancer. Tom won this race on several ocassions, as well as several prominent races such as the Coast to Coast Teams race in 1997 and 1998.

I might make an appearance (or convince Kate to run).

Sounds like it is pretty achievable!

Any word on the difficulty of the run? Climbing/road/off road?

I'm gutted I didn't know about this when I chose the date to run the Beginner Skills course up Makara Peak :(

Hi Pete.

I've not done it before. I spotted it and thought i'd promote it on here to rein in more keeners. I think the running and riding will all be on the easier side of things considering the location, but I don't actually know the course.

Like you said, sounds very achievable and something fun and different.

Last couple of years the run went from Onepoto round to the first inlet (over the board walks) and then up a hill till you were above the moored yachts. Turned left over the paddocks and came back along the inland track. The climb was short and sharp but it was a nice run.
The MTB went from Onepoto round to the road end then up the road and across the farmland to the highest tower above Titahi bay. It then came back down cross country to the beach and back to Onepoto. Not technical but the climb was hard.
The kayak was in the water!
Very achievable. Much fun. Low key. Being able to do it in any order was different, ie do both runs first or last or mix the runs up.

One thing I did notice was it says duathlon MTB12k/Run5k. Last year duathletes had to run twice as the one run replaced the kayak leg. Expect a 10k run unless they have changed things

Amie's Dad is in town so it is a family weekend for us. Chances of me making it out are slim, but i'm hopefull. Amie hasn't done much for ages and won't enter, but i'll do the Duo if I can sneak out for a couple of hours.

I think that Kate and me are in for the duathlon. We are both slow, so will get smoked, but it will be fun.

 Good to play together. With more planning, Amie and I would have been keen. Next year for us. I reckon I'll come out for it even if it is registering last minute and riding straight through the finish and up the hill to home. I could be out for less than 2hrs if I time it right. That might work.

:0 whadayaknow - I'm In!

Will be a family affair with the cheering squad out. Looking fwd to it. Although the singlespeed might not be an ideal weapon for the bikeleg from the above description. Doh.

Too true. Good for these things to get well supported. Great for the mtb'ers to hit out at something a bit different. I have not run since June! I am heading out today along Hutt River to get my shanks 'back on line'.

No. But why the hell would it be a burgle?

Trudi will do fine. As long as she can actually run 5kms she'll love it. Even if the hill is hard work, you don't lose too much time marching up rather than running. The first and last 5mins will be adrenalin. That doesn't leave a big portion to train for. I challenge any coach to defy my impecable physiological logic.

Its an event for beginners isnt it?. least thats what the application form insinuated.

Trudi runs a couple of days a week around the hills of Karori so shes reasonably fit. Shes just nervous about the whole competing thing. It used to stress me out a bit when I first started racing too, dry as mouth for the first 10 minutes of a race usually.

I just read above and someone said the run would be 10km for the duathalon run..I hope not..
