It's a release of some anger, and it's not going to do any harm either. Unless they are going to give them a bigger raise out of spite over something I said on the internets. :baaa:

1.4% pay increase is quite allot considering a backbench MP $134,000 a year after the pay increase, I don't really see why they need a pay increase... I'm sure the average person would be bloody happy with a annual salary that high, considering all you have to do is make bad decisions, be racist (But you only get away with being racist if you're Maori) and abuse the fact you can get free flights and the taxpayer pays for it. Sounds fun.

Paying high salaries doesn't guarantee you won't get monkeys. The management at Bear Stearns, Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley were paid obscene amounts to fuck over their respective institutions.

Sorry, but being an MP shouldn't be about the money at all. I expect the most effective MPs are those who don't care much about the money, but are there because they believe in what they are doing.

Like I said – for many of them if they were in the private sector they’d probably earn more so it more than likely that for many of them being an MP is not about the $ (much).

Also, catman, suuuuuure, what are the chances of them ever getting a pay CUT though? :D I seriously doubt, even if the economy is in worse shape, that they'll get a cut next time it's assessed or in fact ever. What they need to do is tie their salaries to an indicator of economic performance - such as the average wage. If they improve shit for the country = their pay goes upsies, but if they make giant booboos or spend the whole time pandering to their rich mates then pay goes waaaay down.

Actually they passed a law last year that does allow the RA to take the economic situation into account when considering MP salaries. That's why they didn't get a rise last year.

Only chumps believe the pay peanuts line, most large company CEO's I've met are better at office politics and self promotion than actually running businesses...
