:hmmm: Alot of anti Halo sentiment here. How about a positive look at the subject. From somebody who has spent far too much time playing the game, (and not spending anytime with me. -- Mia :grrr:)

This is going to be very readey, I apologize.

To all those people saying Halo is just another Doom with pretty graphics, this IMHO is somewhat inaccurate. Doom is purely and simply, a First Person Shooter. You play a marine shooting hoardes of the undead. No story. Just shooting. The further you get into the game, the bigger your gun. The bigger the enemy. Simple. Doom III however, has a plot. You are a replacement marine sent to Mars. One of your first errands is to find a Lab Tech, as you find him he opens a portal to Hell. Enter the undead. You spend the rest of the game finding a way to send them back. Including a return trip to Hell (not the pizza joint). This has a plot. Halo was released a couple of years before Doom III. Using this analogy Unreal and Quake, both good FPS games, are just like Doom with no story to speak of.

Halo however, like Doom III has a plot. To anybody that has played the game through this is quite obvious. You play Master Chief, a 7'2" genetically enhanced super soldier. You are fighting an Alien collective known as the Covenant, on a ring world called Halo. The Covenant are there because they think that Halo is a weapon of unimaginable power, with which they can destroy the human race. (Through out the game there are references to another planet called Reach which is relevant for later). Later on in the game MC discovers a secret that Halo was hiding (and the covenant released). The Flood. The Flood are an infection 'life form' that attacks the central nervous system of it's host and effectively makes them a zombie.

So as you progress through the game you not only battle the 4 races that form the Covenant army, but the 4 different Flood forms. Each enemy requires vastly different stratagies to defeat.

Towards the end of the game it becomes clear that MC must destroy Halo, to stop the Covenant from firing Halo. Which if this happens, will destroy all sentient life in the universe. Humans and Covenant included.

Halo 2 follows on from Halo a few months later. MC has had some adventures prior to the game starting (again more later). Your start on an orbital space station orbiting Earth, about to go into an award ceremony after your valiant effort on Halo. The intro also shows the Covenant perspective of their loss.

Soon after, the Covenant make a surprise visit to your space station, and have now obviously found Earth. Very bad. Now starts the gameplay. You start off repelling the Covenant from the space station, and head down to earth to help with the defense effort.

After you help to defend New Mombassa from the Covenant, you get word that the Covenant are about to jump ship and high tail it out of there. So you hitch a ride on a Human space ship and get into the Covenants slip space flight path and follow them.

You land on Delta Halo.

Obviously having been on a Halo already you have fair idea what is going on. But more information comes to light. Delta Halo is one of 5 ring worlds (you've already blown one up) designed to, when activated, they all detonate in tandem to destroy all sentient life. This is so the flood can't.

In this regard there are a lot of similarities between Halo and Halo 2. But more of the Covenant back story gets revealed. For example the ruling race led by the Heirachs: The Prophet of Truth, The Prophet of Regret and, The Prophet of Mercy. They feel that their Forerunners have left the Halo worlds as weapons for them to use against their enemies. Now you take the role of the disgraced leader of the Covenant army from the Halo and Covenant fleet destroyed by MC (again more later). He is ordained as an Arbiter, a warrior sent on a suicide mission to find the heretics that are saying the Prophets are leading them into a battle for the wrong reason.

As the Arbiter you follow a parallel story to MC as you get further into the game the Arbiter realises what Halo is for, and must in effect become the Heretic he has been sent to kill. The game ends with Gravemind (the Flood Queen Bee for want of a better example) talking to Cortana, MC's AI). Leaving the game open for Halo 3.

That is the games in a nutshell. As well as the games there have been three books published. Halo: The Fall of Reach. Halo: The Flood. And Halo: First Strike.

The Fall of Reach starts off with Dr Halsey checking on a six year old boy John on the planet Reach. Reach is a planet more or less on Earths door step. It is the planet where alot of Earths space craft are made, and the Human races 2nd home. The book follows the development of the SPARTAN II program. The humans next generation super soldier The SPARTANs. During the book, you watch John SPARTAN 117 as he is known go through training with rest of the Spartan program (150 children with varying attributes) to become Master Chief the leader of the Spartans.

At the end of the book the SPARTANs have a battle for Reach that the Covenant win and then 'glass' the planet killing everything on the surface. John (MC) escapes on a ship called the Pillar of Autumn. There he gets the ships AI Cortana (whom was designed by Dr Halsey as likeness of herself) loaded into his suit as they are about to crash land on...Halo.

The Flood pretty much follows the first game. Although does go into alot more detail about the Flood. And the monitor of Halo; 343 Guilty Spark, a small ball like robot that is to guide anybody through the Flood infected planet to set the weapon off (protocols do not allow him to set it off himself).

The final book First Strike, is set in the months between Halo and Halo 2, but with some more on Reach. It seems that the Covenant didn't destroy all of reach they left a small pocket untouched. In this pocket are a bunch of Marines, Dr Halsey (the over see-er of the SPARTAN II project, and a handful of SPARTANs including MC who had gone there to see if any SPARTANs survived after the battle on Halo.

Now that the Covenant had found Reach, and knew that Humans had found what the Covenant were looking for. It is only a matter of time before the Covenant would find Earth. So MC, Dr Halsey, the ramaining SPARTANs and Marines decide that the best defence is a good offence. So they hunt down the Covenant Fleet and subsequently destroy it, leaving just a few remants of the Covenant fleet remaining.

First Strike also ties in weel with the changes made to the gameplay of Halo 2. It describes the new weapons used by Humans, MCs dual weilding capabilty, and the armour upgrades from the original Halo.

As far as gameplay for the games go they play well, the graphics run smooth, dolby 5.1 sound kicks arse. You never seem to get caught on jagged rocks and invisible walls in tense battle situations.

Then there's the multiplayer portion of the game. In Halo: CE, this was an after thought. But it gave the game a lot replayability. I personally had people over about once a week to play some multiplayer frag fests. I would also go to a mates place and have LANs on aregular basis.

Halo this was improved upon more so. Now Bungie realised that their tack-on kicked arse so Bungie spent more time refining it, and setting it up for Xbox LIVE. I spend a hell of a lot of time on LIVE playing Halo 2.

Now my thoughts on the Movie.

As you can see there are lots of areas that the movie could follow and expand on. There is afterall a complete back history of the games dating about 40 years from Halo.

Bungie have retained creative rights on the movie, if they don't like anything, it won't happen. Halo is afterall their baby. The script writer for 28 days later has written the screenplay. He writes a kick arse zombie movie BTW IMHO. And Peter Jackson is the Exectutive Producer. He makes a kick arse zombie movie BTW IMHO. What two better people to collaborate on a movie that will, more than likely involve zombies of varying forms.

Another difference to the bad Video Game to movie examples previously mentioned is, a Hollywood studio went to the game publisher about making a movie based on the game. Bungie and Microsoft went to the studios with a movie screenplay based on the 'Halo universe', written by a very competent script writer. So the movie will not necesserily be a port of the game, unlikely infact. It could be based on one of the books. Perhaps set after Halo 2, and prior to Halo 3. Although I don't think so as Halo 3 should be released next year. The movie in 2 years.

PJ has lot of experience in combining live action, with scale models, and with CGI. Tall characters (MC 7'2" and The Elites, a race of Covenant) with short (grunts about 5' tall).

I personally feel that this movie is going to do well, will represent the video game well, and do to video game conversions, what Batman did to Comic conversions.

Well that's my $100 worth. Again sorry about the readeyness of it, but I get pissed with arguments that have no argument

Refute any of my points, just have reasoning. I've taken the time to type this, that is the least you can do.

the thing about halo is not that it doesn't have a storyline. it does. but with the gameplay as it is, it might as well not.

when i played halo it was just mission after mission. i didn't get any satisfaction - 'yaay, i shot at this thing on the wall...'
there was never anything i could identify with, nothing that really provoked any emotion within me apart from "hahaha i p00ned your warthog LOLOL"
there was no real immersion, it only seemed executed as a simple arcade shooter - it played like doom and i got bored as fast as i did with doom. doom 3 was just as boring. plot yes, gameplay no - it would have been ok if there was some change.

ok, so now i'll talk about HL2. and it'll sound like i'm obsessed but i'm just trying to make my point.
you get to know the characters. you get to know the way of life on the future-earth. you have a name, and you're fighting with comrades that are desperate to escape the combine. you feel sorry for the people at the start of the game in the dank apartments, peering out the window at the combine vehicles as they start raiding the bottom floor. you hate the combine because they're heartless fuckers, and you're immersed in the world and thus DO identify with it. you're scared out of your ass as you're creeping around in darkness with a crowbar as a zombie takes a swing at you, at the same time feeling disgusted because you feel sorry for the poor guy as you hear his screams while the headcrab has control of his body.
another part of the game you're caning down the beach in a buggy or down a river in an airboat and it's just exhileration.
at the end of each chapter you'll see one of your 'friends' instead of just some menu screen. and i feel ashamed to admit it, but the references to HL1 cracked me up.
until you get to the end, which was a bit sad. but hey, left it wide open for another awesome game :)

i see that as the difference between an average and a great game.

Batman Begins
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Serenity
The Bourne Supremicy
Kill Bill 1 & 2

options like The Woodsman or The Machinest probably would not meet your criteria of 'mainstream Hollywood'.

Not seen Serenity, but I've heard good things.
And Kill Bill? Not one of the finest moments.
Batman Begins is by the far the best of the Batmans, I'm not sure it makes a top five.
But replace Kill Bill with 21 Grams (almost mainstream) and stretch the boundary to 1999 for The Virgin Suicides and you've got yourself a deal :D

I'm sure we'll be able to add the new Wallace and Grommit movie to that list also.

Bab Boys 2 is only about two years ago also (maybe a bit longer now, but still) That counts for like, 10 great movies because it's so awesome.
