Obama - A Change We Can Believe In?

Postby j2hyde on Mon 22/Feb/10 5:37pm

For a few years now people have talking incessantly about how they think carbon emissions are "bad" but have not been prepared to actually do anything that might reduce them in any significant manner.

Luckily, Obama isn't most people. He's gone and done something practical and sensible - which might actually work.

Is this finally a "change we can believe in"?

it creates a lot less waste than most other power sources and with research it can be made far more efficient and safe. if the us put the same sort of $$$ into creating safe nuclear power as they put into weapons research then it could only be matter of years

Think about it people, the only big issues ever in nuclear power were ages ago and caused by total incompetence and idiocy. Not to mention one was in russia. It's safe nowdays.

I didn't know you had solved the problem of safely disposing of the radioactive bi-products of nuclear power wuffy?

If you look behind the rhetoric of safe, clean, green nuclear power I believe you will find there a a number of issue not even close to being solved. Once you take into the the building, disposal of the waste and much more significantly the future decommissioning of the stations you will find they do not compare to wind, solar or hydro power in terms of environmental footprint.

Completely agree with that but I don't think the actual operational safety of Nuclear Power has been an issue for quite a while.

The thing I think that needs to be looked at most with nuclear power is the impact from Uranium mining right through to waste disposal. I'm happy that the actual power generation step is great with its environmental impact (or lack of) I'm just concerned the other steps in the process get overlooked.
