If you go with one of the big brands you could probable drop into your lbs and try something very similar to get an idea of what they are like to ride.

hey you guys have been awesome. thanks so much. i think i'll settle on the GT avalanche. it's only a few months old and been ridden only 8 times. it looks immaculate. is $380 a good deal do you think? Ape, thanks for your blurb - that was very very helpful and kind of how I feel. you've reiterated where im coming from, so thanks.
