Aratihi gets muddy as all buggery in winter, and a couple of track days spent maintaining it (or putting small grade reversals in to get the water off the track) would pay off better in the long term.

This has been of course thought of and will be allowed for, and plenty of work has been underway on that track for some time. We are currently waiting on some raw materials to resume work at the moment :)

Hope to see you there soon!

Touche. If it weren't for frisbee three days a week, plus 2 days a week that I dig elsewhere in welly I would probably make it up to a dig in the park.

Don't get me wrong, the work that everyone has done on northface in a short period of time is astounding. It's a nice trail. And yep, I haven't been involved in the building of it. But I do dig all over welly. Every week. And have dug all over welly for over 12 years.

My point is that if you look at the hours of effort involved in modifying a trail that is otherwise quite rideable, all to avoid 15 seconds (if that) of riding down a 4WD track.

I'm sure that the trail team up at Makara Peak has a plan for how everything fits together. And I'm bound to enjoy riding it when it's executed.

For some people for a variety of entirely legitimate reasons work parties just aren't possible, but does this mean they can't make a comment without engendering a condescending retort or having a not so subtle guilt trip laid on them? Jono has put in hours and hours of work over years and years on many of the trails around Wellington we all love, so I would consider his entirely reasonable post would be worth treating with a bit more respect.

Dismissing perfectly valid opinion because it's given by someone who doesn't meet your high standards of involvement just alienates people and makes Makara Peak look more like you think it's your kingdom and not the cooperative venture it actually is - remember it depends on donations as well as diggers, and differing opinions from all interested parties should be able to be discussed openly on an open forum where the topic has been publicly posted without being made to feel their opinion is of less value because you haven't seen them pick up a spade lately.

:withstupid:

Why not finish building Northface and jfk before starting this new one. Surely it would be difficult to manage having so many projects on the go. If your not careful Makara peak will turn into a collection of half finished tracks.

My partner is not of intermediate level but does enjoy riding down Northface aside from a few dodgy corners (i can think of a few offhand). She doesnt like riding down the 4wd drive as its too rocky and steep, but has no problems riding down Zacs to get to Northface - including that top section you say is too difficult.

How long is it going to take to build this new track? I doubt it woyld be finished before winter. Perhaps time is better spent fixing the issues with Northface and completing JFK 1st.

I particularly liked the 'There are no trail pixies' piece that Jono wrote that featured in Spoke magazine about 3 years ago.

I had written a logical reply however I will put it this way:

If you are building a four houses, do you have to wait until one is totally finished before going to the next one?

I hope none of you guys are schedulers...

This will be completed in a month or so while almost all of you are sitting on your bums watching television.

What a great way to encourage people to come out track building.

Lucky we've got better trails elsewhere we can ride without feeling like we're trespassing. :)

Stop being a patronising ****
You have no idea what "almost all of us" do with our time.

Argh. Think I need caffeine.

Colin wrote:I like the rough bits at the top of Zacs. They have clean open approach and exit and are not steep or sustained. Therefore great for growing the skill and confidence to attack other challenging sections of the park.

I feel care needs to be taken to avoid widening the gap that is appearing between groomed ‘intermediate’ tracks and the more difficult tracks that are being left to go feral. Tiding the lower section of RLE and the new bermy bits on LL together with the Zacs improvements and plans for Livewires all seem to be opening this divide. Although there is still Nikau, and other tracks outside Makara Peak that I /others can ride.

Agree totally. (Although I'm at the lower end of the skill scale & possible not who the park is aimed at  ) It's nice to have some mid-ground between "yep, I can ride that fine" and "holy **** that's far too scary/technical"

Please don't take this as a complaint - I have some idea of how much work goes in to building/maintaining trails & am hugely grateful for the efforts.

I think this thread is good for trailbuilding in Wellington - I'm now more interested in building tracks at locations other than Makara Peak, just out of spite.
