Re: New Journey Planner Website

gives out weird directions for some small diversions when coming in from paremata/mana into the city as well. through porirua it sends onto the foot path when the road is fine. and does not give any notice or info comment about it..

Turn left at Lyttelton Avenue
Turn right at Foot Path, heading South
Continue on Kenepuru Drive

unlike what it does for ngauranga gorge ride.

Turn right at Sh 2
Continue on Hutt Road
This is a busy arterial road, consider using shared path alongside.
Slight left at Thorndon Quay

also going through tawa (or rather south side of tawa), it sends rider on a slight detour via the train carpark (boscobel lane) for training station rather than stay on main rd.

Slight left at Main Road
Continue on Boscobel Lane
Slight right at Willowbank Road

when leaving jville southbound, the map shows going straight onto the motorway, and not through the tunnel through the access road.

Also probably want it to direct riders on the shared path down the gorge rather than the north bound side

Interesting mix of things going on here.

1 - The recommendation to use the shared path (aka 'Foot Path') in Porirua is 'cos that's the shortest route. Perhaps I should put a warning on that road riders would prefer to stick to the road?

2 - The Boscobel Lane detour must also be the shorter route (by about 5 cm) but I think I'll fudge that segment length to make the planner recommend staying on the main road.

3 - The Tunnel/Access road alternative I don't quite get. I'm not familiar with that area. What should the directions say? Can you click and drag the route across to this alleged access road?

4 - I don't see it directing riders down the northbound lane? It looks like this to me: (what are you seeing that I'm not?)

your link has the right route, and i can't get it to do it again..

Also needs a note about that gorge area.. as you can basically ride with the merging traffic onto the gorge motorway, then cut across newlands access lane to the shared path. which is what i do.and what your link has you doing OR option that most of the err slower commuters take, is to take a foot/bike path that takes you over the newlands access rd and misses out merging traffic.

may pay for you to check it out yourself so you know what i am talking about.. as it is a high traffic area in the mornings, and if your a bit nervous about commuting.. it would definitely put you off if directed down the wrong route.

Good idea. I'll add an alert to the Gorge section

New Question of the Week is up at:

http://www.gw.govt.nz/journeyplanner-competition/

From Te Papa to Wellington Airport is just over 6 km. How long does the journey planner estimate that trip will take to cycle at average speed?

The winners from last week won double passes to Reading Cinemas. Easy.

Another new question is up at
http://www.gw.govt.nz/journeyplanner-competition/

This time it's all about how much you save by cycle commuting rather than driving.
Reading Cinema vouchers up for grabs again.

BTW, I think those issues around Tawa, the Gorge, Sunshine Ave, etc are sorted now.

Another new question is up at
http://www.gw.govt.nz/journeyplanner-competition/

This time it's a test to see if you can click-and-drag the route to an off-road path (specifically the Rimutaka Rail Trail). This opens up some cans of worms in terms of data quality, but we need to get the main off-road routes sorted, so please let me know if you see something fishy.

For the competition, Reading Cinema vouchers up for grabs again. Six tickets were won today.

Bump...

And this week's question is a test of finding the least hilly route.

Cycle prizes move into stage II - bike shop vouchers, guide books, lights, etc...

Bump...

This week's question involves working out how many calories you'd burn on a ride around the Miramar Peninsula. A bit trickier that previously, so the prizes are getting better...N-Zone leg and arm warmer up for grabs.

OK - find me a bug and go into win. That's right, every problem you can find with the route-finding of the journey planner (on-road or in urban off-road paths) will get you another entry for the prize draw.

Bring it on!

News release
29 August 2012

Plan your cycling journey on your mobile phone

If you enjoy cycling in the Wellington region you can now plan or change your journey en route with the 'Walk Cycle Wellington' mobile app. To install the free app go to journeyplanner.org.nz/app
The mobile app is the first of its kind in New Zealand, complementing Greater Wellington’s ground-breaking online walking and cycling journey planner.

Simon Kennett, Greater Wellington’s Active Transport Coordinator, says the beauty of the mobile app is its convenience. “For example, if you’re in a café having a break during your walking or cycling trip you can explore new destinations or alternative ways of getting home. You can continue planning and making changes to your journey while you’re out and about – you don’t have to be sitting in front of a computer. It gives you a lot more options and flexibility and helps you to be a bit more adventurous and spontaneous!”

“Like the online journey planner, the app will navigate your journey for you,
using a database of decades of local knowledge and experience of shortcuts and off-road paths.

“The app can tell you how long your journey will take and how hilly your trip will be. And if you’re keen to know the carbon emissions you’ll save on your journey, or how much money you’ll save by not driving, the app will tell you.

“The walking and cycling app covers the Greater Wellington region so it’s a fantastic tool to help people explore parts of the region that are not so familiar to them. And with daylight saving on our doorstep, now is a great time to download the app.”

The cycling and walking mobile app is the latest addition to Greater Wellington’s transport information resources, all designed to make it easy for people to become less reliant on cars for getting around the region.

Resources include the online walking and cycling journey planner, detailed cycling maps and the Metlink website and mobile app which have all the public transport information you need.

The first 100 people to download the Walk Cycle Wellington app (and send the words ‘Prize Draw’ to the app’s feedback function) will go into the draw to win a double pass to the All Blacks v Argentina game this weekend or one of six 32GB USB sticks.

Nice app Mr K. :)
It did some interesting things from my work to my home which Im keen to checkout. The only questionable one would be (walking) taking a stair path on the left from Glenmore up to Upland Rd. Wouldn't be my first route choice! :D
The android pinch zoom doesnt seem to be implemented.

That is a curious route choice. The routeing engine tries to track the shortest route (which that is, by about 300m) while placing a cost on extra climbing. It doesn't place a cost on steps - we tried, but found our altitude data wasn't accurate enough for that function to work. In particular, our altitude data is a bit rough around cliffs, tunnels and viaducts.

I'll check out the android pinch zoom thing. It seems to work on some android phones. I wonder if this has anything to do with Apple suing the socks off android makers who use pinch zoom? Is pinch-zoom a function that will be lost to android phone users as they upgrade to new versions of various software?

Dunno.

my pinch zoom seems to work on everything else at the moment - maybe its a model specific thing.
I have no idea what the repercussions of the apple suit will be - Suffice to say Im going to ensure automatic updating is switched off!! :D
