Another update - the journey planner now has new trip calculators. One for health savings, one for carbon emissions saved and one for vehicle running costs saved.

Enjoy.

It's been a while, but we now have a new map, with lots of very tidy updates. Now we have a bunch of data updates to do in the next couple of weeks and will soon add the ability for the address finder to recognise points of interest like railway stations, hotels, tracks and parks (at the moment we utilise NZ Post's address finder which only recognises postal addresses, although you can select non-postal locations by using the right-mouse click function). Anyways, it's getting better, slowly but surely.

BTW, I used this to work out my route for the Wellington Nine Peaks Race - was very handy for comparing the distance and climbing invovled in different route options.

And now, not only does the journey planner show you the altitude profile and take altitude into account when picking a route, it also takes it into account when estimating how fast you might go up or down a hill, and estimating how many calories you might burn.

Check out Brooklyn Hill:

Now, yet more data tweaking and an address-finder upgrade on the way (hopefully in time for Christmas - yee-hah!).

The big upgrade of the month is that the address finder now recognises places of interest, not just postal addresses. Man! I've been keen on this upgrade for over a year - it improves the functionality heaps. E.G. If you want to go from the Beehive to Mud Cycles to Makara Peak, you can just type those names in. We've put in a few hundred places of interest, but if you have any additions you'd like to suggest, fire away.

Enjoy

Check out the new tab at top-centre of the http://www.journeyplanner.org.nz website - 'Plan and Win'. Yep, it's competition time again.

This time the questions are really basic and one in every tenth entry (with the correct answer) wins a prize. Prizes include guidebooks, lights, arm-warmers, mini tools, etc.
Basically it's designed to get new people to have a go and slowly pick up the skills to use the planner's various features. But it's open to all Wellington region residents, so don't be shy. The odds of ending up with a prize in the mail are 1-in-10 (a lot higher than getting hit by lightening or winning lotto) and it's free to enter.

The competition runs from now until the end of August.

Some odd things happen in this piece of software.

to get from percy dyett in karori to almost anwhere, it sends you LEFT into sunshine (so sending people uphill rather than down, onto a narrow twisting and longer route) to get anywhere. Even to karori park??? turn right at the bottom and past the scout hall and you are IN karori park, but the planner sends you 2 blocks away, then back in a loop.

Last time I tried this software to find a new cycle route into town it sent me down the pedestrian steps to Rawhiti terrace

I did, of course, try it see if it was indeed better/quicker. Was not road bike friendly, but was quite fun on bike with squish.

pedestrians were not friendly - even though I was polite at all times.

I found that the directions had a little warning about stairs when I managed to get it to plot such a course.

It posted that route as a 'default' cycling route from Karori to town - I didn't alter/select/modify anything for it to chose that. Seemed odd.

seems all fixed now, and has the much better route selection of Aro valley.

Thanks! There are still a few bugs with the base dataset (which is massive) and finding them is like finding a needle in a haystack. The segment from the corner of Percy Dyett down to the Sunshine Ave play centre was disconnected at both ends (don't ask me why). I've put in a replacement segment, which will go into the next data build on Saturday. I'll check it on Monday and it should go live soon after.

We blocked cycle access to the Rawhiti steps a few months back.

A free folding bike voucher to anybody who spots another doozy like that!

Perfect!
Not knowing anyone who lives or works in Meadowcroft Grove, I never would have found that bug. Where should I send the folding bike voucher? :)
