Nelson Riding (this Weekend)

Postby AgrAde on Thu 9/Jul/15 10:23pm

Entertaining the idea of dropping everything and driving up tomorrow morning.

What are the conditions like? What bike shop do I call in to for directions? Best trails? (for an AM/DH oriented rider)

Good camping spots?

People to ride with?

Tracks are riding sweet, all dry atm
At R&R (Torpedo7) shop on Rutherford st you can get Steve Newports trail map book, it's out of date (particularly Codgers which was wiped out in a storm) but the AM/DH stuff at Sharlands hasn't changed much and has all the good tracks of the whole region.

I'm more of a trail rider so don't ride much AM/DH but here are the picks:
=} Fringed hill (big grind of a climb) then Black Diamond ridge / Sunshine ridge / Peaking ridge
=} In that area is also 629

Sharlands (closed for logging during the week, but open at weekends)
=} Supplejack, Matai face, Rimu
=} Broken Axe / Kaka DH
On the other side of the creek:
=} R&R (less technical than the above but still a challenge for trail riders)

Codgers, conveniently close to town:
=} Turners has not tech but has lots of air time http://www.pinkbike.com/video/400525/
=} Lollipop, see map, but beware many of the other tracks on this map are now gone http://www.nelsoncitycouncil.co.nz/asse ... eDec12.pdf
=} The non technical 'peoples favourite' Firball has some good air time in the new lower sections

Camping at this time of year
I'm out of town this weekend soz

Awesome, thanks for the post.

am/trail/fr/dh I don't even know what they mean any more. I ride a bike. As long as it's not a 4wd track I'm happy.

FOr trail riding there was a summer thread need-advise-nelson-mountain-bike-rides-t126672.html

Best Camping for track access is Maitai campsite, but will be cold at this time of year. Otherwise Tahunanui campground, bit warmer, has cabins too

Btw most of those DH tracks have shuttling options, not sure of any organised ones this weekend but could try http://www.helibikenelson.co.nz/

Have fun :)

I'm bringing a friend now and he's managed to convince me to book some real accommodation

Was hoping to get away early enough to ride today but now with the change of plans.... Night ride!
