Napier To Gisborne

Postby jont6t8t on Mon 8/Oct/12 2:25pm

Has anyone else thought about the future potential opportunity to cycle touring / tourism that Kiwirail may be creating by cancelling services and maintenance on the Napier to Gisborne rail line? I understand that Kiwirail’s reasons are economic. I also wonder whether cycle tourism could replace some of the lost revenue to Gisborne, and after looking at the route on map.google.co.nz I can see that it would be an awesome ride!

IT IS not the end of the line for the mothballed Gisborne to Napier railway link, says railbike inventor Geoff Main.

Two years ago, the inspiration for a unique, eco-friendly adventure tourism project for the Gisborne railway line struck Mr Main in the middle of the night.

He leaped out of bed, punched key words into Google and found no matches.

Now the Auckland-based boatbuilder’s vision of a tandem railbike that can be pedalled along railway tracks presents an innovative tourism opportunity for the Gisborne to Napier line, which was mothballed by KiwiRail this week.

Yoked by a lightweight chassis, Mr Main’s twinned bicycles travel along the railway track. etc

The only problem is, that you would have to dismount the track to get around the huge drop out which currently has tracks hanging in mid air.

If kiwirail are not going to fix it for trains, certainly not going to be fixed for cyclists.

Would be an awesome "easy" ride through some fantastic country though.

I thought this was being held 'in reserve for the future' so tracks won't be lifted
After watching a rail video recently, of a run through there, would certainly make for an awesome ride
