What an inspiring day it was yesterday on Stromlo for the kiwis. Two of the most humble and solid NZ boys you're likely to find attacked the Euro XC fostress and turned heads on their way to 12th and 14th in the U19 Junior race. Dirk Peters and Richard Anderson now know for sure they have the wheels, the drive, the conviction and the guts to kick on from here and dirt race themselves into challenging at the front of the field. Planning has already started within the MTBNZ family on how this might happen, and the future is looking good for these XC boys at this level. The coaches took the junior XC group out to dinner last night to celebrate and while a KFC splurge was briefly considered, a good aussie pizza dinner was thankfully settled on.
Eddie Masters and Matt Walker qualified mid pack for tonight's 4X race and under the watchful direction of Ken Cools inspired 'coach to the stars' Craig Pattle the boys put the final touches on gate starts and line options under lights last night. The 4X race tonight will be a good one, as will the U23 XC race at 2pm. Tim Jurgens competes in the 26" Elite Trials today as well. The DH Team have now had enough practice and are itching to get stuck into their timed qualifying run this morning.
Weather in Canberra is still really weird and this place should lay claim to our 'four seasons in one day tag', but the race courses are all fine, hard and fast and will hold through the weekend. It has rained pretty heavily this morning but if things are true to form we'll be baking under intense sun by lunchtime. Tomorrow is all about Elite XC racing. NZ has three men and two women racing, all confident and settled in their prep.
