The Phundamentals clinic covers over how to adjust your body weight over your tyres for maximum control and stability. Although it seems a simple concept is is surprisingly the most common cause of crashes on Mountainbikes.

For experienced riders, the concepts taught in the Phundamentals are the answer to all of the irritating habits that have built up over years of riding and experimenting. Although experienced riders are generally in control due to their time on bike, they are often held up in a few small areas without the means to address these problems. If you are experiencing any hesitation in corners, loose gravel, mud, steep terrain or jumps/drops the Phundamentals will give you the tools to progress.

Arm pump and wandering/twisting/awkwardness in corners are common indicators of a balance issue and are easily fixed. The techniques are also invaluable in assessing and counteracting reactions to fear from past injuries/crashes, and in turn preventing them in the future.

The Phundamentals is also the basis for the techniques taught in the Trailmaster Series and must be completed before attending.

For beginners, the Phundamentals gives the rider the necessary tools to enter the wild world of Mountainbiking without the hospital visits. Because the sport is so young the existing "old wives tales" often do more harm than good for the beginner (and experienced riders for that matter!) and can cause the rider to regress. By doing the Phundamentals early on the rider can progress with the correct techniques and improve faster and more safely.

The day consists of;

Morning Session 10 am - 12 pm.

Introduction

Bike Set-up

Theory and weight distribution concepts and exercises.

Lunch

Afternoon Session 1 pm - 4 pm.

Hit the trails to practise

Practise/refine/practise/refine.

Braking and steep terrain

Undulating terrain

Corners and traction control

Summary and finish.

Would of been interested in these but is a little too late notice. Are there any further ones planned down the track?

Yes. Have been running these courses on the first weekend of each month. There will be more dates put up on the website soon.

Was there a date that suited you? I may be able to set up a course for that weekend. :)

Hey Zane, I'll be keen on some of the other clinics - Trailmaster 3 and 4 - and a Jumping specific class (if available). Are you planning on running these in Christchurch?

I've done a couple of the earlier clinics a few years ago. For anyone sitting on the fence and contemplating doing the course, I can't recommend these clinics enough.

Gabby and Dodzy will be teaching the Trail Master clinics down here for the next few times (I think they were looking at running TM 1 and 2 next time they are down). They are planning on running more Trail Master courses, but dates are yet to be confirmed.

The comment that I like most from people who do the courses is "Why didn't someone tell me all this stuff years ago!!"

Re: Sk:chch - Phundamentals Mtb Skills Clinics Feb 09

I had been riding for a few years before doing the phundamentals course. I had picked up a fair bit about riding intuitively, but there was a lot that I missed. In the weeks following the phundamentals course my riding and enjoyment just ballooned. Subsequent improvements have been more subtle, but I'm still learning. Before doing the course, I had plateaued and my riding just wasn't going anywhere.
