Mrp 1.x Chain Guide

Postby i is andy on Thu 26/Nov/09 5:50pm

I'm thinking about going for a 1x9. Has anyone used the MRP 1.X chain guide?

Is it easy to install/set up? Do you get much rub on the guide using the extremities of the cassette? Can you still use the standard 9 speed rings?

Cheers

I haven't used it (I use the paul comp chainkeeper http://www.paulcomp.com/chainkeeper.html) but do know others who have successfully used it.

To throw in another option e13 now are making a 1x9 guide too. Looks more adjustable which may or maynot be an advantage to you depending on what you are running.

I found the MRP I had (still have - will send asap, Dents!) really nicely made. I was unable to use it, as the 1.x is designed to sit at 2 o'clock or so on the ring, and this fouled the large main pivot on my Commençal.

I'd contemplated an MRP system3, as they're compatible with almost anything, and have a great rep, but looking at the Paul Comp, I'm tempted. The Paul Comp stuff is beautifully made and works well - I've got the drop outs on one singlespeed and also use the disc WORD hubs.

What frame are you looking to use, and what type of riding? Any of the available options will run with normal chain and rings.

I'm also a huge Paul comp fan, I rock their mountain thumbies (which are uber rad), hubs and the chainkeeper.

Main disadvantage is sourcing paul comp parts. Was looking at getting another set of mountain thumbies today and postage was $35USD

What are you running the guide on Nick? And for all your riding? I'm seriously considering one.

If I pop for it, I'm happy to get thumbies with my order and split the postage too.

Oh, the frame is a Ventana El Chiquillo. Riding XC with some racing fun.

Cheers for the other options Nick. The e13 and MRP look pretty similar - only the e13 will accommodate more ring sizes, which could be good future proofing?

Are the e13 and Paul comp guides available without paying huge postage?

The MRP are available locally, and easily. Any shop should be able to get them. The MRP is adjustable, but if you're rocking XC, a 34 is probably the limit to how big you'll go.

I'm running the guide on my Niner (as a 1x8) Has worked well, I've never dropped a chain. Is a little fiddly to get it running with no chain rub but otherwise nicey made and works well.

Yeah, I've been able to find the MRP available which is why I proposed it first.

If I was to get the MRP I'd get the smaller size fore shore

I like the MRP 1x. I used it for a while with a 32T ring, and it worked nicely. No setup hassles or tricky bits, just fit it and you're away. Didn't really miss the other 2 chainrings during any races I was doing at the time either, but they were fairly flat.

Sweet jeebus, I just creamed myself a little bit thinking about running one of these with the SRAM RTS shifter. Kind of trigger, kind of thumbie.
