Mbo Trailbuilding - 27th June - Redwood Loop, Mcgouns, Duned

Postby HamishS on Fri 25/Jun/10 8:26am

This Sunday we'll be doing some more work up at McGouns. We'll start off by reshaping another one of the corners that drop down to the stream. After that we'll do a bit of touch up work on the track that the PD crew dug on Thursday. They had a really productive day, cutting out nearly 200m of track. This is about half of the climbing track that will link down to the bottom of the dip in Wakari Road. Click Here for information about the trail

We had a good session last Sunday. It was a bit drizzly - not so good for riding, but perfect weather for track building, esp sheltered under the trees. Alan and Richard came up to help put some finishing touches on the Redwood loop. We spent around 3 hours reshaping the top corner of the switch-backs that drop down to the stream. The original corner was one big berm - fine when riding high and fast, but cambered and tight when riding slowly. We cut the top of the corner down a foot or two and used the fill to build up the exit so you don't drop as much height when turning. We also widened the corner another meter in the process.

Alan stuck around for another couple of hours and we reshaped the second corner down. Once done we shingled both of them and gave them a good thumping with the plate compactor. Hopefully anyone who found the old corners challenging will now sail around them. Have put some pictures in the Image Gallery

When:
Sunday 27th June, 10am - 12noon (or longer if you feel like it)

Meet:
Corner of Wakari and Polworth Roads (down the bottom of Wakari Rd just before the dip through the trees).

Bring:
Bring a grubber, shovel, rake. We'll have a few tools there as well.<

Hi HamishS,

I'll be emigrating to NZ in September and will be looking for a decent mountain bike club in Dunedin when I get there. I was wondering what trail centres are like down your neck of the woods. From other threads it seems like a fair bit of DIY trail building takes place. In the UK this is frowned upon... what about over there. Also what about your right to roam. In the UK you get a lot of trampers and dog walkers chuck you dirty looks if you wander any where near them... whats it like over there???

Also are you Scottish??? If you are... do the local trails compare to Glentress and Inerlethan???

Sorry about the Scottish thing...

Sweet - give us a yell when you get here and we'll show you around!

Have a really good little club down here - only a couple of hundred members but we get a fair bit done. We run some decent sized races and use the money to build tracks so all good. We don't really have trail centres - more a bunch of trails around town, but they're all on the edge of the city so it's only a 15-20min ride to most of them. Slowly working on linking them up. Club website is http://www.mountainbikingotago.co.nz which has info about tracks, events etc.

All of the trials we build are on council land - have a really good relationship with them so they're all legit. Sometimes getting permission just takes an email, and other times it takes a year of submissions. If you're into building then there's heaps going on, and if you want your own little project we can easily make that happen. Have an reserve called Signal Hill which is a designated MTB area. This is where our DH tracks are - stacks of potential for new lines, DH, freeride, XC, whatever.

There are heaps of old walking tracks around the place and we're allowed on pretty much all of them - just gets a bit slippery in winter. Good sized hills around town (600m). Same deal here with some of the looks from walkers, but to be honest it's not that often you come across anyone on the trails, let alone someone who's an ass. Lots of riding up in Central Otago which is 2-3hrs drive.

I don't think we have quite the same right to roam as you guys do. Can't just wander through private land, but there's no need to do that locally as the council owns pretty much anything of interest. If we're doing back country missions up in Central , we just contact the station owner and they're usually fine.

Sorry - am Scottish in name only. Didn't quite make it to the trails up your way last time I was over so can't compare. We haven't had millions of pounds to put into trails like you guys have, but what we're doing pretty well with what we've got.

If you've got any questions flick me an email on activesystems[at]xtra.co.nz

Cheers H

What you guys are doing in Dunedin sounds like exactly what I'm after. I've got loads of plans for my future in mountain biking and you sound like the place to start. Thanks... In the UK trail centres are really becoming big business, with bike shops, bike washes, cafes, family trails, hardcore down hill trails and places you can buy spares and get your ride repaired if needed, but like you say they cost millions. Sounds like NZ could is in it's infancy with this type of thing... which is part of the reason why I want to get involved with it... excellent.

Thanks again

Mbo Trailbuilding - 4th July - Redwood Loop, Mcgouns, Duned

Postby HamishS on Fri 2/Jul/10 8:18am

This Sunday we'll be putting the finishing touches on the Redwood Loop at McGouns. There's a little bit of shingling to do and some mesh to go on two of the boardwalks then the loop is pretty much complete. If we've got any time left over we'll tidy up a little bit of the PD dug track. Click Here for information about the trail

We had another good session last Sunday. We reshaped the 3rd switchback corner down to the creek then did a bit of tidying around the little footbridge on the shared track that heads back to Wakari Rd. Have put some pictures in the Image Gallery

When:
Sunday 4th July, 10am - 12noon (or longer if you feel like it)

Meet:
Corner of Wakari and Polworth Roads (down the bottom of Wakari Rd just before the dip through the trees).

Mbo Trailbuilding - 11th July - Redwood Loop, Mcgouns, Duned

Postby HamishS on Thu 8/Jul/10 11:11pm

This Sunday we'll do some more work at McGouns. We'll be going over the track that PD have been digging - smoothing bumps and widening corners. There's 500m of new track that needs to be tweaked before we can start shingling it, so any help would be appreciated. It will be fairly light work (not like carting shingle!). Click Here for information about the trail

Last Sunday ended up being a bit of a maintenance session. Tim, Hayden and Lindsay come out and we moved around 5 ton of shingle - Tim with the dumper and Lindsay with a wheel barrow. Most of it went on patching up the soft and bald spots on the track that climbs up from Wakari Rd. We also shingled a bit more of the track just below Wakari Rd. We ran the plate compactor over it but it's probably going to be a little soft for a while as the shingle is finer then what we've used in the past (this half-truckload was donated by City Forests). Over time it will pack down tho. Tim and Hayden also put wire mesh on the rest of the bridges.

When:
Sunday 11th July, 10am - 12noon (or longer if you feel like it)

Meet:
Corner of Wakari and Polworth Roads (down the bottom of Wakari Rd just before the dip through the trees).

Bring:

Mbo Trailbuilding - 18th July - Redwood Loop, Mcgouns, Duned

Postby HamishS on Fri 16/Jul/10 8:49am

This Sunday we'll do some more work at McGouns. If the weather is good and the moons align we'll be dragging in some power poles for a bridge down the bottom of Wakari Creek. Failing that we'll tidy up some more of the PD dug track and dig a couple of small unfinished bits. Note that we'll be meeting at the bottom of the dip in Wakari Rd - just above Ross Creek. Click Here for information about the trail

We had a really productive session last Sunday. 8 people turned up - Spencer (just arrived from the states), Lindsay, Ben, Alan, Tim, Steve, Mat and myself. Tim, Alan and Steve got stuck into the 4m high gorse that covers the area where we're going to build the carpark. The rest of us groomed 400m of the track that drops down Wakari Creek. This included reshaping 5 switchback corners, removing bumps and roots, and filling in holes. This will make it a lot nicer to ride, and it's now all set to shingle. It's fairly tight and twisty if you're riding down it, but it designed as an uphill track and rides nicely going uphill. The descending track that we'll build on the other side of the creek will have lots of fun stuff built into it....

When:
Sunday 18th July, 10am - 12noon (or longer if you feel like it)

Meet:
The bottom of the dip in Wakari Rd, just above Ross Creek. Look for the track on the McGouns side of the road.

Bring:
Bring a grubber, shovel, rake. We'll have a few tools there as well.

Mbo Trailbuilding - 24th July - Redwood Loop, Wakari Creek D

Postby HamishS on Fri 23/Jul/10 11:14am

I'm going to be at Wakari Creek (McGouns) on Saturday clearing track with the chainsaw and marking it out, so if anyone is keen to lend a hand please let me know. It's really good to have a couple of people to drag all the dead trees aside as I do the chopping. Provided it isn't too wet I'll be there from 10am through to 4 or 5. Will be working on the descending line which is on the true left of Wakari Creek. Best to park at the bottom of the dip in Wakari Rd and walk into the bottom hub then take the uphill track (ie don't cross the creek). Click Here for information about the trail

We won't organise an 'official' session on Sunday as Tim can't make it and I'm not sure if I'll be able to be there, but if you feel like a dig then please don't let that stop you. There will be heaps of track marked out ready to dig after Saturday's effort. Flick me a txt on 027 442 6474 if you do end up going out. Basically:
- The poles mark the uphill side of the track
- Start by stripping back all vegetation / organics - clear about 1m from the poles
- Cut into the dirt to bench in the track. Don't put dirt on top of leaves etc as it tends to go mushy.
- Please disturb as little as possible outside the line of the track (ie don't remove any more trees / ferns).

We had a mixed morning working on the trail last Sunday. We had a crack at moving one of the power poles but the tracked dumper didn't have enough grip to drag it along the ground. Was pretty muddy and the dumper didn't have a load on it so not surprising really. Chris's 4WD was able to drag one up the road a little tho! Will have another at it with a loaded dumper, hand winches or possibly hire a small excavator to tow them in. Since we had lots of people keen to get their hands dirty we spent a bit of time tidying up the track just above the bridge site. Alec re-cut one of the switchback corners so it will ride a lot better. While he did that Alan and Steve dug a drainage ditch around the next corner down where we'd hit a bit of a spring. Was amazing how much water came out of it. All going well the corner will dry out now. Ben and Emma dug a huge pit on one side of the creek where the bridge beams are going to go. Then we all cleared a bit more track. Mat came along late (as usual) so Alan and I stuck around and we cut the bottom hub where all the trails will come together. Tim spent a bit more time clearing gorse from the carpark area, and hopefully we'll get taskforce green to get rid of it for us.

When:
Saturday 24th July, 10am onwards (or longer if you feel like it)

Meet:
The bottom of the dip in Wakari Rd, just above Ross Creek. Look for the track on the high side of the road.

Bring:
Bring a grubber, shovel, rake. We'll have a few tools there as well.

Mbo Trailbuilding - Sunday 13th March, Wakari Creek Dunedin

Postby HamishS on Thu 10/Mar/11 11:55pm

This Sunday we'll be running a work party at Wakari Creek. Over the last 3 months PD have been working on an intermediate grade climbing track which will run from the dip in Wakari Rd up to McGouns Rd (linking to the bottom of the Pineapple track). The first cut is nearly complete and it's now time to get in there with some skilled hands and tweak things a little before PD start shingling it. Most of the work will be light cutting and raking to smooth out the track, and a bit of track widening in places. Click Here for information about the trail

When:
Sunday 13 March, 10am- 2pm (even an hour or two would be a great help)

Meet:
Bottom of dip in Wakari Road, just above Ross Creek. If we're not there, head up the steep track beside the portaloo, the continue up the new track until you find us.

Bring:

Postby HamishS on Fri 8/Jul/11 8:37am

This Sunday we'll have a work party at Wakari Creek to finish off the new track that climbs from the bottom of Wakari Road up to McGouns Road. The PD crew shingled the last section yesterday but there are a few soft spots that need a little more shingle up around the wier on Ross Creek. We need to fix these up before they get any worse as the track is already getting quite a bit of use. Click Here for information about the trail

When:
