More good news: Jared can now receive visitors - he's at the Spinal Unit at Burwood Hospital. Visiting hours are 1pm-8:30pm weekdays and 11:30am-8:30pm weekends.

If you're out of town but would like to send him something the address is:

Jared Brown
Spinal Unit
Burwood Hospital
Private Bag 4798
Christchurch

I talked to his dad (Murray) this morning and Jared can wiggle his toes and move his arms, which is encouraging. I'm going to send him $400 in CD/DVD Store vouchers and $100 in Whitcoulls and Season 1+2 of Drop In today

For added coolness a reporter who's doing an article on Jared has got in touch with me and he's going to talk about Vorb's fundraising efforts in his article. So there's still time to donate =} Clicky Clicky

Mountainbike appeal

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A national mountainbike website has started an appeal to help raise funds for injured Nelson downhill racer Jared Brown. The appeal was launched on www.vorb.org.nz late last week and over $500 had been donated by yesterday. Details of appeal are located on the home page of the website. Brown is in Burwood Hospital in Christchurch after breaking his neck in a high speed crash nine days ago.

In related news.
Press wrote:Burwood Occupational Therapists Rally For 30%
Press Release by National Union of Public Employees at 9:32 AM, 03 Aug 2005

"Occupational Therapists who rehabilitate patients with spinal injuries at Burwood Hospital are holding a rally today at 4:30pm to bring to the Government's attention their campaign for a 30% catch-up for ALL health workers," said Nadine Marshall, Secretary of the National Union of Public Employees (NUPE).

"Burwood Hospital workers (also including clerical staff and social workers) have voted to join a five-day strike if an offer is not made on the 10th of August that meets the 30% claim for ALL Health Workers," said Nadine Marshall.

Nadine Marshall said that New Zealanders recognised the critical role occupational therapists served nationally in the care and rehabilitation of people who have suffered (for example) sporting injuries and car accidents. "NUPE is sending letters out to rugby clubs to draw people's attention to the fact that Burwood services will be disrupted and the reason - the low wages that occupational therapists are receiving for the services that provide people with an increased quality of life."

"Today's rally is directed at the government, who should be providing the CDHB with enough funding to ensure that Occupational Therapists (OT) who have tertiary qualifications and training equivalent to teachers and nurses are paid appropriately. The current level of OT wages is 30% below a teacher and nurse," said Nadine Marshall.

"Government MPs need to step in to prevent disruption to services at Burwood Hospital instead of continuing to wash their hands of their responsibility to all health workers following their decision to fund a catch up in nurses' pay," said Nadine Marshall.

I saw him today, everything seems to be going real well. He's got feeling nearly everywhere now. It'll be a long road to recovery, apparently he'll be in there until January, but he's in real good spirits. He's real stoked with everyones support, anyone that's wished him well or donated money, pat yourself on the back! I think he's getting a laptop soon, so he'll be frequently lurking, if not postwhoring on here in the not too distant future!
