23 Months In Nz - Queenstown & Tyres!?

Postby BrokenZ on Sun 5/May/13 3:19am

Hi,

I'm heading over from the UK with a working visa for a couple of years this July. I'm starting off in Queenstown. Does anyone know of any good landlords or shared accommodation for a few months at a time? Or is it easy to find a shared house on arrival?

As for tyres. I've searched through other posts on this site and have found some good info, but not quite specific enough.
This is me: 160mm bike, raced DH in the past, likely to run some uplifts, full-face and open face, not adverse to riding XC loops (have raced cyclocross), consider myself mostly a trail/gravity enduro (Super D) type rider.

I'm not familiar with the trails out there, but I currently run tubeless front and rear. I'm happy that a single ply Maxxis 2.35 Minion DHF 60A will be fine upfront. I'm unsure whether or not to put a dual ply tyre on the rear, to fit and forget being as I'll be running tubeless? Or whether I can get away with single ply tyres with reinforced sidewalls? Either way i'm after something fast rolling like an Ardent, Crossmark or Larsen. But open to ideas.

Thanks for your help.

I would have thought that a reinforced single ply (ie EXO casing from MaXXis ) would be the minimum you'd want out the back on a bike in QT, especially if running tubeless

I run a tubeless combo of a 2.5 minion 3c exo front and 2.4 Ardent exo rear on my sanction and find it ideal for the riding I do, which is typical South Island riding, anything from QT to Canterbury high country shingle fests and rooty beech forest riding.

It will be rather challenging to find affordable (or any...?) housing in Queenstown in July, particularly for a short period!

Thanks for your replies.

I'm happy to hole up in a hostel until I can find a room, I was just looking for some local knowledge really. Moving in to a place for 6mths to a year would be fine also. Once I have somewhere safe to leave my bike and kit I can travel around before summer.

As for tyres, I'd be much happier running an EXO over a dual ply, thanks for putting my mind at rest. :)
