And then tried to stick to the story of being in Mexico until it came to light that he wasn't.

Yes he lied. Rabobank's official statement on the matter confirm that.

Rabobank wrote:Rabobank is shocked and enormously disappointed that Rasmussen has lied about his whereabouts.

Wrongly reporting whereabouts is a flagrant violation of UCI rules and is unacceptable"

The question is why he was allowed to start at all given that the missed tests were early to mid June? The rules stipulate that a rider must be stood down if he has missed a test within 45-days of a Protour event... yet the UCI hasn't appeared to communicate Rasmussen's situation to the ASO.

The tour officals where not aware of the missed tests, I'm unsure whos fault it was for not communicating this information. Team rabobank?

I think cycling news said that ASO was unhappy with UCI for not letting them know of the missed tests and that UCI as responsible for doing so.

There is an interview with De Rooy somewhere where he said that Rasmussen had over the last week stuck to his story about being in Mexico, but when confronted with Cassini's "I saw him in Italy", that Rabobank found out about through the media, Rasmussen then backtracked and admitted to lying.

I can't be arsed finding the interview at the moment though.

I also think MR might have some contract clauses that he must comply to, and Rabobank also had some answering to do to remain a Pro-Cycling team registered with the UCI. Rabobank may have given MR the chance to come up with his itinerary and he didn't answer, probably thinking his position in the Tour would keep Rabobank off his back. But it is a team sport and Rabobank has sponsors. I know if I were a team sponsor I would want the win to come without any negative implications. Consider if you are someone's boss and they outright defy you. Is that not insubordination and cause for dismissal? Absolutely yes.

MR in the end was a victim of circumstance, but its his own fault. If no big names were caught taking drugs he'd probably be sweet. But considering all the scandals there was no way rabobank could still let him ride and save face. He lied, he's under suspicion and thats enough.
I reckon there's a 10 to 20% chance he's clean. I just can't imagine how a guy that skinny( looks 60kg's dripping wet) can have such a good power to weight ratio to be so good in the hills day in and day out. He's got the weight thing sorted out for sure, but the power? I just don't know...

I was 59.6kg this morning, after my shower and dripping wet. Might have knackered my scales though, water + batteries = not good.
Wonder if we'll hear much more of Rasmussen now, or whether he'll just opt to live the rest of his life out as that great Danish bike rider that might have won the Tour...

I'm sure he'll ride for the rest of his life. Professionally on the other hand, I don't like his chances...
