Gartner perhaps?

On reflection they may not do free AV consumer assessment as is free and consumer but they do have figures on laptop warranty repair rates by brand etc

Not really benw - the cost difference of an nVidia chip and an Intel chip to a motherboard manufacturer is miniscule.

As far as dell goes I have been using them for years as business machines (all lappies). Not a single problem on any of them and they get a hard life. Dell is not a bad option. Alienware machines are awesome. Have 1 here that I use as a gaming machine ... it runs every single game out there and comes back asking for more. The 17 inch screen is insane and the sound is bloody incredible for a laptop. Only complaint I would have about it is that as far as laptops goes it weighs about the same as the Titanic and its about the same size.
If you want a machine that does it all without complaints this is it. Yes its pricey but then so is anything when you start shopping at the upper limits of performance. Look at the price of an S-Works Tarmac compared to the normal Tarmac. IMHO

I have just brought a new laptop, prev ran windows XP and every anti virus software but AVG pissed me off big time. My new Dell Inspiron has Windows 7 which works great and has Norton Internet Security which hasn't caused any issues. Have had NIS, 360 and Nod and all were resource hungry monsters. I don't run Mac as most of the Sport Sci software I use (power meter analysis, game analysis, video analysis) are not supported. Judging by the above it seems clear I have made the right choice.

I think thats being abit harsh on the Mac's
They are great machines and I believe still the machine of choice of most of the video/image editing world.
Also my brother is an IT expert and still maintains that if the world suddenly moved to Mac's he would be out of a job.
Having said that ... I don't own one. :)

I fix laptops as a hobby, 80% of what I fix is dell/hp. toshiba and asus are the ones I see least of. One of the reasons of the high attrition rates in business laptops is that they have a much harder life than your average personal laptop. We all have our own opinions.

I read a survey recently saying Toshiba and Asus laptops are the most relible, with HP being the worst.

I've known a few people with Toshibas and they've had no probs with them and I got one recently and its been great so far.

Hey I respect a Mac users choices in life, I even have some friends who are Mac users. I just don't go to any Mac user parties or alternative cafes where Mac users hang out.

I have nothing against Mac's they just don't run the main software I use as a coach and because I am a poor student I can't afford one, SOB!!!

So where would we find these results?

Having had a bit of a look, none of the reviews even feature avg in the top ten. Those that do feature avg, its the paid version not the free one. So your arguement of the free ones being as good as the paid ones is a bit dead in the water.
http://www.pcantivirusreviews.com/antiv ... rison.html

There was a time I had a similar view to yours regarding anti virus. Esp Norton being a resource hog. I was given a copy of norton 360 3.0, the latest version to try. I was very pleasantly suprised. It even runs on my 5yr old desktop without any noticeable impact on performance. It does all it has to do when the computer is idle. Is spending a bit on an anti virus really worth it to keep your data on your computer safe?

Its a sunny day, now lets get out there on our bikes. :)

They are sweet, great developer laptops. We've purchased a couple of MX 17's for our senior developers, one has the double video card option for giggles, probably a sin using those as development machines but they do compile stuff very quickly
