Norton was on my hit list as well for being such a resource hog. However it was suggested to me to try norton 360 3.0. I can say I was very pleasantly suprised. It does all its own stuff when the computer is idle and stops what its doing when you sit down and move the mouse. Downside to that is you have to leave it going at some point to let it do its thing.

If you are going to be taking the laptop into lectures don't get a laptop with a glossy screen! All you will be able to see in a bright lecture theater is yourself and the people sitting behind you.

coll thanks very much y'all.

Get rid of IE and install firefox/ chrome.

Of course, if you are going to be doing heavy video editing or playing lotsa games, spec everything up and multiply the price by 10.

agreed. the current communal Powell family laptop has AVG and chrome. seems to be the way to go. what is the real difference between a PC and a Mac? what makes them so radically different? never really had a go on one. will it really make me spontaneously homosexual? that's truly unbelievable.

basically i plan to use it for a lot of internets (whether it be 'researching', downloading shit or watching hour upon hour of top gear re-runs on youtube) but its basically to get me through the next three years of my engineering course. i think i'd survive without, but having one would be a good advantage i guess.

If its just cruising the net you will be doing most (and taking notes in class ;) ) then there is no point spending thousands on a mac. A cheap and reliable windows machine will do the job fine. Also (I'm only guessing here) I assume most CAD programs won't be mac friendly (I know Solidworks isn't).

That would be the weirdest thing I've seen - except for a guy who identifies himself with an image of Cadel Evans and a dog!!! :D :D

It certainly takes the piss out of conservative Christians, but it also sort of mirrors the way Mac users behave - not that they're gay, quite the opposite - it's more that Mac users act like born again fundamentalists - they don't discuss the technical merits of computers, they just scream slogans over and over "Buy a Mac!!" "PCs are crap" etc.

If you need specialist technical software, you'll find dozens of freeware or shareware products to run on a PC that do 90% of what you want and only take a week to figure out - for the Mac you will find one program, it will do every function you want, it will be the most user firendly experience you've ever had - and you'll have to pay thousands of dollars for it.
