Labour Turns Wheels For Cycling Safety - Fenton

Postby Melissa_Theuriau on Wed 16/Apr/14 12:46pm

With more than a million New Zealanders now using cycling as an attractive alternative means of transport it is past time their safety was taken seriously, Labour's Transport spokesperson Darien Fenton says.

Due to speak to a cycling rally at Parliament she said a Labour Government would make the safety of cyclists a priority.

"Too many cyclists are dying needlessly.

"Labour will act to improve cycling safety, including taking seriously the recommendations of the Cycling Safety Panel’s report, due in September.

"We will also dedicate more resources to cycling through the Land Transport Fund, revise the road code where needed and invest in driver education and cycling infrastructure.

"Labour also wants to see more kids biking to school with dedicated safety zones and the provision of school based instruction.

"Cycling is good for the country. It helps free our motorways of congestion, reduces carbon emissions and improves the health of our families.

"It needs to be recognised that more than a million Kiwis now use bikes as a legitimate transport alternative. They have every right to be safe."

Cool, this should pull some votes. Watch for govt reaction saying they are already working on cycle safety and have big plans for the future.

:withstupid:

National would have to do something really dumb (they probably will) to even allow Labour to get enough votes to contest. Greens have no policy worth mentioning and Labour has already put a nail in the coffin with that partnership, and NZF is just the crap slinging party.

Maori Party is the only other party that seems to be already making stable ground IMO, thanks to getting people in front of JK with one on one discussions (albeit in a bit bad light with the whole $5k dinner), which could prove to create a beneficial partnership for both parties. Theres no crap slinging, and they have a stable history of getting feedback from their supporters and running with the majority of their supporters views, but they need to sort our their leaders for this election pretty soon.

Which ever party makes a play for more cycling infrastructure needs to tread carefully - theres lots of calls for cyclists to pay for infrastructure via other means.

It is all just election year lies anyway.

I will be fucked off if Jonkey gets back in as I think him and Nats are fucking us over with asset sales and other dumb economic policies that favour the rich and fuck over everyone else... but I think the Nats would have to do something pretty dumb to not get back in from here.

"I thought freedom of speech was one of the things people went to Gallipoli for. But obviously in her opinion, it's not."

It irks the shit out of me when people ignorantly assume that the ANZACs were doing something righteous at Gallipoli, rather than just illegally invading a fairly democratic, non-evil, freedom-of-speechy (for the time) nation that posed absolutely zero threat to us at the behest of nasty fucker English "nobility".

Aside from that the Mad Butcher should be free to support whatever politician he likes.

The sort of thing a gormless Labour candidate would do too, though.

You should preemptively complain to them
