Korokoro Dam Track Re-discovery

Postby its that guy on Mon 6/Sep/10 7:05pm

Did'nt know where to put this, but i felt like a had to share it :paranoid:

Today me and my friend had the bright idea to go for a trail ride.
Problem was, we only had 2 bikes... kona stinky and a xc hard tail...

So reaching into the depth of my memory and remembered a trail up to korokoro dam, Its a tight little gully with a track that follows the steam up it. Going past two dams along the way.
So we set off with less than pleasant conditions... I cant remember the last time i have had this much fun on a single trail in so long. Its not the super technical single track or the perfectly manicured berms that we are fast becoming used to, but a raw mountain bike track and no matter what mountain bike your riding your always going have a grin.
I seem to have forgotten how good simplicity can be :)

I like the 2-3 side tracks that run on to it. Also the downhill from Belmont trig is still one of my favourites in the whole region.

Korokoro is a nifty wee track, and a great way into Belmont Park from that end of town for sure

Just one thing though... do remember it's a shared use walking track, and not a MTB track - as it's so heavily used by walkers/runners/families you kinda should ride fairly cautiously along there. :)

I also like how several parts of it are never dry, even when the region is suffering from 1 in 20 year droughts :o

But being on a bed of rock it doesn't seem to wear too much, except when the stream claims another section...

Hey yeeeeah!

Going up the Belmont Trig side and then down the other and out through the stream trail was the place me and my friends always used to ride before we discovered Makara and spoiled ourselves.

I went up there from the Cornish St end 3 or 4 months back and went as far as baked beans bend towards the Trig and man has that section of the track deteriorated... There always used to be a little bike n' hike to it but jeeeze now it's a shocker.

The downhill from the Oakleigh St end was also a ripper when you knew there'd be no people walking/running ie. at night...

Bangin' good times..

I use it when I'm doing a longer ride to work (from town, out to the hutt, and either up to the dam and back into town or up to the top of oakleigh street, down to the dam and back into town.

It's a nice singletrack - made lots of fun with the addition of speed.

Thats why its best when its semi raining mid flood and around 4ish :D
You only meet the odd runner but bikes give way to every one so there are no issues around these things :)

Another note is the optional river crossings that have guaranteed lols

We ran a night-time super-d up there in winter last year. From the top of belmont trig out to cornish street. I clipped a rock wall with my bars while sprinting in the big ring and got tossed over the bars. Fortunately I landed on the track rather than down into the stream (it was one of the narrow bits). Slacky won with a time of around 18 minutes, which is pretty damned fast.

Thats quick! I find it fun to do the track down from the manguraki entrance down to the dam, then down to korokoro from there. If you stay alert and keep out of busy hours you can get a super fast n fun downhill thats a decent length  :)

The Oakleigh St entrance? It used to be a bit nicer when it didn't have diagonal water bars along the middle section  but it's still a bit of a laugh, for sure :D
