Kiwi's Teams For Next Season

Postby Tugboat on Wed 10/Aug/11 9:20am

Time to talk about who's heading where next year.

George Bennett has a stagiarie contract with Radioshack. Hopefully he peforms well and gets a full time ride in the big leagues next year.

Will Clinton Avery get a decent offer after being shafted in the Pegasus fiasco last year? He's put together a good sting of wins in recent weeks after struggling with illness early in the season.

Where will Roly go with HTC-Highroad folding? Garmin is being cleaned out by BMC and Green Edge by the sounds so they might be looking for some strength in their train for Farrar. Be a return of sorts to the old Cervelo squad who picked him up after the Beijing Olympics.

Green Edge is on a buying spree and Julz's name appears in this list of "likely to join" riders published in the Sydney Morning Herald... http://www.smh.com.au/sport/cycling/lea ... 1ijbg.html . Personally I see him riding out the rest of his career under Vaughters especially with the damage that's already being done in the team by Green Edge and potentially BMC if its true that they are after Hushovd.

Hendy's name had also been floating around as a potential sprinter for Green Edge. That is until today when this tweet (which looks like it was supposed to be a private message) came out...

Greg Henderson on Twitter wrote:I've decided I'm over being flicked for races so have moved to Lotto. Gonna join back up with Greipel. Keep that to yourself please.

Think the tweet was deleted pretty quickly but it was already preserved on bike chatter's rider tweet page... http://bikechatter.com/main/foruser/93/Greghenderson1 . Greipel and Hendy will be a potent combination for the Lotto team.

The "Likely to Join" is looking increasingly accurate as well.
Pieter Weening has just been confirmed as signing for Green Edge.

Hunter is confident that he will have a place in the sprints during some of the Grand Tour stages and one-day races during the next two seasons.

"Now, there are a lot of guys leaving the team this year, Julian Dean and others," he said. "I spoke with Tyler and we both feel that this is a good time to come back to the team and for us to work together for the coming future."

Dean leads BikeNZ team for World Road Championships

Seven-time Tour de France cyclist Julian Dean will spearhead a small but potent team in this month’s UCI Road World Championships in Denmark.

Dean (Garmin Cervelo) will be joined by fellow Pro Tour rider Greg Henderson (Team Sky) and Jack Bauer (Endura Racing) to form the three-strong men’s team for the world championships in Copenhagen on 21-25 September.

Radioshack’s Jesse Sergent and Bauer will compete in the time trial, while Linda Villumsen (AA Drink-Leontien.nl ) is the sole woman, competing in both the road race and time trial.

Director Sportif Andy Reid said selection for the three spots has been one of the toughest in recent times.

“We now have a number of riders in Pro Tour Teams and other racing to a high level both in Europe and USA,” Reid said.

“The course was also a key factor in our selections, with the race likely to favour the sprinters.

“Julian and Greg are world class sprinters who have had excellent success this year. We needed a strong rider on flat circuits to ride for them, have the potential to ride down breaks and do the donkey-work.

“Jack Bauer has proved he is extraordinarily strong and all three have been in top form this year.”

Henderson has had two wins this year on stage two of the Paris-Nice and stage three of the Tour of California; Dean was part of the Garmin team that won the team time trial and finished top team at the Tour de France and Bauer won stage two of the Tour of Utah.

Sergent has won three individual time trials this year in the prologue at the Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen, the Eneco Tour and Tour du Poitiou Charentes where he won overall honours while Villumsen won the bronze medal in the time trial in 2009 and 2010 as well as the silver medal at the Commonwealth Games.

The BikeNZ team is:

Elite Female: Linda Villumsen (AA Drink-Leontien.nl, Auckland).

Elite Male: Jack Bauer (Endura Racing, Nelson), Julian Dean (Garmin Cervelo, Rotorua), Greg Henderson (Team Sky, Melbourne), Jesse Sergent (Radioshack, Feilding).

U23 Male: George Bennett (Trek Livestrong, Nelson), Jason Christie (Ashburton) Tom David (UCS Crabbe Performance, Auckland), James Williamson (Pure Black Racing, Alexandra).

U19 Female: Georgia Williams (Auckland), Sophie Williamson (Alexandra).

U19 Male Alex Frame (Christchurch), Fraser Gough (Havelock North), James Oram (Pure Black Racing, Auckland), Hayden McCormick (Te Awamutu), Dion Smith (Pure Black Racing, Auckland)

Staff: Andy Reid (Director Sportif), Sarah Blake and Hans Sente (Soigneur), Craig Geater, Goncar Mindaugas (Mechanics), John Dean (U19 Team Manager), Jono Hailstone (U19 Coach)

Don't know if it's been announced yet but the German media is reporting that George Bennett has been offered a neo-pro contract with RadioShack-Nissan. That's great news for him after his good showing as a stagiarie during the late season.

Various rumours suggest it will be one of...

Omega Pharma Quick Step
Saxobank
Radioshack-Nissan-Trek

Guesses anyone?
