Hurt: Coast to Coast legend Steve Gurney is recovering after being hit while out cycling, according to a media report.

Coast to Coast legend Steve Gurney has been injured after being hit by a car while cycling in Christchurch, according to a media report.

The nine-times endurance winner was out biking in the city Wednesday at 5.30pm when the accident happened, Newstalk ZB reported today.

Gurney was sent head-first through the vehicle's window in the collision with the vehicle outside a Woolworths supermarket on Ferry Rd...."

Coast to Coast organiser Robin Judkins has confirmed Gurney was admitted to hospital on Wednesday night, but was later discharged.

Hope Steve's OK. Did he grab a windscreen wiper as a souvenir?

5:30pm is a scary time for any cyclist. To many muppets out there thinking about what's for dinner than worrying about saftey.

My pick is that Steve Gurney is fine, and that the driver of the car came away from the accident far worse off. Cos Steve Gurney is fully tough as.

Ill second that. I reckon the entire length of Ferry road is a major hazard for bike riders. Your better off cutting through Bridal Path-Port Hills - Centaurus road to avoid att the carnage that Ferry Road brings.

Sometimes you just cant beat cycling out in the back blocks like North Canty and Lincoln/Greenpark. No glass and fewer idiiots.

Whats the bet there was a line of traffic going home to sumner and gurney was biking in the cycle lane inside the line of traffic. Someone will have left a gap for a car coming the other way to turn into the supermarket and they will have turned right across him...

If this is the situation, then it really is not his fault, but I could see how it could happen.

I agree. Ferry Road is a scary place on a bike.

true - I never go down ferry rd, it's a killing zone

however have you noticed the 'inspired' cycle management they're trying to bring in where port hills rd passes under the motorway - they now expect all cyclists to go up onto the footpath etc.....presumably to stop issues with how narrow those lanes
are.

I'll just be carrying on taking the whole lane and making traffic wait I think

Except the idiots you do see are doing 120kph in Hilux's and see how close they can get just for sport.... :eh:

Yeah i did notice that. What a shambles. A cyclist clearly did not come up with that design. Pisses me off actually....
