It looks like Ollie has a good 10-12 km lead from Andy at the moment, well on their way up the Molesworth. It's going to be an interesting day between our two local lads :sly:
but there is a 8min giv or take a minute time gap between those lastest locations so the true gap is a lot less than it shows

Yeah but I took that into consideration. Ollie is now 20km odd km in front and their current updates are only 1min apart. I wonder if Ollie is pulling out or if Andy has had to stop. EDIT: I just checked the details and Andy hasn't stopped. Ooooo, it's getting interesting. How can I get any work done when this is happening?

Go Ollie, go. No, go Andy. Go Ollie. Go get him Andy. Oh man, why do the two in front have to both be locals?

Actually Andy grew up Blenheim didn't he?, but as he helped me with Crater Rim training advice I am gunning for him also :D

With Simon I would expect.

This on the Brevet blog site
John Randal with Simon Kennett and Chris[?], 08:14 Wed in Hanmer: "Just arrived in Hanmer. Had a short sleep in Culverton. Feeling pretty hammered - but, on the home stretch. So... phoowh - Blenhiem here we come."

Jane and her Mum have gone for a drive up the Awatere to get some pics and relay progress as coverage allows. Will pass on anything interesting.
Ollie is the best kind of freak! Might see if he wants to hit Whites Bay Loop this arvo.....

Would be interested to hear how Thomas's makeshift bike shoe repair is holding up. One of his cleats fractured last night :( which is why he retreated to Culverdon rather than pressing onto Hanmer. Also he had lost his rear light up the Wharfedale somewhere which made night riding on a SH a bit dodgy. He was going try to tape his bike shoe to the pedal in Hanmer. :)

LOL  I was thinking before that he will easily have time to do a lap or two of Jentree on his way through Taylors Pass. Just one hill to go now and Mr Whalley is home sweet home

Are you Thomas' coach? I've done some training with him and the man can certainly get along. Looking at his stats it seems he did around 295km in the first 24hrs, must be hella painful to back that up with continued effort. I'd be a little afraid to see what sort of repairs Thomas has made re: taping his shoe to his pedal, I wouldn't be overly surprised if he's bonded it with some sort of awful xmas neck tie, that'd be his style. How's he feeling? I got a few txts from him in the earlier days saying he was finding the heat and sandflies a bit troublesome but haven't heard from him so far, he must be well hurting by now.

An interesting anecdote to give those who don't know Thomas a bit of insight into his colourful personality (in the same vain as the backgrounds above). I did a road cycle race once and went out wayyyy too hard. Thomas had warned me not to follow the leaders, but alas I had followed the leaders. He was accompanying me for fun, I was pretty new to cycling so my race pace was a nice Saturday tootle for him. It was about 60km into the 150km round the mountain race that I finally blew. In hindsight i'd done well to follow the leaders for that long, but it sure was stupid, especially since he'd explicitly warned me not to do this. It was raining and we were going up the false flat toward Kaponga and I was severely hurting. It was here that Thomas came up alongside me with another friend and they both informed me they were putting me in my box. They acted out putting a large box around me and then locking a key and said "We'll talk to you when you're ready to come out, man". Then they went forward and formed a nice little pair in front of me so that they could drag my sorry ass home the last 90km. I wasn't in any mood to thank them at the time, but it was a pretty damn decent thing to do. Since that day we've had a kind of running joke about how I went out too hard, but I've also found out a lot about that particular box. Thomas tells me that he's spent so much time in his that he's begun to decorate it. He talks of fantastic purples and oranges and polka dots and other bizarre material that only he could come up with. I have no doubt that he's securely in that box right now, and doing a bit of redecorating i'm sure  .

He's a bloody tough rider but also a very kind person. I've been proud to watch his progress during the Brevet and hope he makes it home safely.
