I met you at SS Nats last year, and chatted for a bit, but was a little uncertain to see you out of place. You were sitting having a feed with your road bike beside you. How long were you out for?

Haha, I thought u were. I was down looking for jobs (newly completed Journalism diploma). about 3-4 days. got some additional riding in to make it over a big week.

Maybe moving down if I can get a job. Would make getting to this race easier for a start.

Not a real interesting ride that one. Rotorua to New Plymouth is nicer if a little shorter (300km).

Are planning on join the 1200km of fun times? I already planning bike modifications.

I reckon my steel cyclo cross with plenty of rack mounts would be good, though maybe some kind of monster cross/29er or touring MTB with a bit of suspension would rule a lot of it, some of that 4x4 is pretty gnarly, someone endo-ed and broke a collar bone last time I rode the Maungatapu, and the time before that the DH bike felt ideal :D Porika is much the same, although the Molesworth/Rainbow road and Matakitaki are just your standard 4x4 gravel road. Cyclocross would be mint for those bits and the 50% road. The rest of the off road will be all new to me (if I do do it)

Have knocked off 400km in 19hrs before unsupported on the road, 1200 on and off road will be a whole new level of awesomeness!

already started trying to figure out what to carry :D

I reckon some sort of larger wheeled machine could be good for this too

My work bike with big wheels and a shorter stem I recon would be ideal. Not sure about how light you would want to go with the gear

I am torn on what bike I would use. I have a proven carbon frame (I would have to annoy Simon and see if he still had the rack he made) and I have a steel frame with pannier mounts.

I think Simon's set up for the Great Divide was pretty good though.

Yeah I hope to! Simon's keen to ride 350km on the 350.org international day of action (Oct 24), and at this stage we'll be basing it on a loop around the Tararuas + extras. We're also keen to ride New Plymouth to Taumarunui via Whangamomona in mid-Nov.

As far as bikes go, my Giant CRX might be a good choice, perhaps with some burlier wheels? Or maybe my XTC with a 29er front wheel a la monsieur Kennett's GDR journey. way_downsouth - we may have to arm wrestle for that carrier ;)
