IMO, the Petite Brevet is a very different test, and much more like a very long and tough XC event than the Kiwi Brevet is!

Concur, i did the 2009 Petite Brevet, it is a 2 day climbfest, a different kind of challenge to the 8 dayer I imagine.

However, half the battle is navigation (not making mistakes or having to stop and map read) and planning (knowing where you can get water/fuel/sleep and your pace allows you to travel lighter), and being able to practice the course sorts this, therefore the Petite Brevet (if it stays on Banks Peninsular) is ideal for you Chch'rs in that respect

Thanks for all the reports. They have all been great reading.
Can I ask a question of those who have just finished? What ability of rider do you have to be to complete this event?
If you've fished this do you ride Elite, Sport or rec at most normal mtb races?

Hi, if it helps, I've never done a MTB race in my life. The Tawhio (thanks Sifter), a 300km tour earlier in the summer and a couple of long weekend tours last year is the extent of my cycling, apart from commuting, and a few skids around the trails.

Of course, that shows in where I finished relative to others, but it was no stress, no drama for me to finish on the Friday, and I had an immensely enjoyable ride around the top of the south meeting some great people, with a fair bit of time spent lying in the sun. Now I know I can churn out 1000km I'm already thinking about how I could go a lot faster next time! Not lying in the sun would be an obvious place to start :p

I'm pretty sure anyone could do the Kiwi Brevet, I guess the key thing is you do have to want to spend 3-8 days just riding your bike as you have plenty of KMs to think about it, and no ones going to care if you stop. So it is more of a mental thing.

Do it!!

The Tawhio, Petite, G.S.B all on the hit list, KB is going to be my bi-annual love affair......

Before KB I felt as tho my riding was going nowhere, I was board with the same ol same ol (xc/enduro stuff, weekends away, big day missions etc) it needed a little sugar and spice you could say.

 Nice choice in beer too, nothing like a 9% Trappist special to soothe the body at the end of a long day ;)

I LOVE reading this sort of thing. Well done bro.

There's some amazing riding between your home town and mine, and I look forward to getting out together some time soon. I look forward to dishing out a return hug too..
