Kayaking Tree Trunk Gorge

Paddling Tree Trunk Gorge = madzcore skillz.

http://teamhydraulics.blogspot.com/2009 ... gorge.html

Those that have biked the Tree Trunk Gorge track would no doubt have been awed by the chasm that is the gorge. Until a big flood in 2005 which washed out the tree trunks which gave it it's name Tree Trunk was un-paddleable and had claimed a number of lives of those unfortunate or foolish enough to try. Even now it's only been done a handful of times successfully and is about as serious a proposition gets in whitewater paddling.

I paddled a bit on the Tongariro back in the day and the get out point above TTG was a "must make eddy". For good reason !! On one occasion back in the 80's 4 dudes on a homemade raft didn't get off the river in time and perished in there :(

The first time I was there we went for a wander along the edge of it and there was an old rescue litter lying in the bush. It was a pretty freaky spot.
