You obviously missed the point of this thread being about Jade Goody not being news in NZ. Thousands of people die from cancer everyday, but why do we have to be subjected to the media soap opera of this silly bint? Keep it for the women's mags. :eh:

Ever thought that Jade Goody dying might be news to women in NZ?
Sure she was ignorant and boorish and famous for nothing but she died at 27 from a type of cancer that is easily screened for.
I reckon it's bloody sad.

EMPATHY doesn't define newsworthiness. I feel sorry for her and her family or for anyone who has that happen to them, but it's only news if your news media is run on tabloid principles, which ours increasingly is. And selling the message as being about cervical cancer, as they tried to, is disingenuous at best.

What I thought was absolutely ridiculous about it all on the short part of the news I saw before turning it off, was the crowds of people lining the funeral route, like it was Diana or something (then again I though lining the route for Diana was stupid too)

Agreed. Our media increasingly relies on sensationalism. It's kind of pathetic.

However, the cervical cancer message HAS hit home for women here (well, at least for me and many of my friends).
Some of the comments here are abhorent. "cunzor cancer"? Shame on you.

There was a good piece written recently by the cultural commentator Theodore Dalymple who argued that these sorts of events show that the English have lost their stiff upper lip and have turned into a nation of self-indulgent saps.

I can make some equally offensive remarks about prostate cancer if that would help add balance to this thread? :)
