Hi Jackson and Rose! Nice new tandom!

Planning on doing this one sometime soon. How was the hut for smelly hunters? Was it full? Get shot at any time? ;-)

Only one smelly hunter. There were also 5 smelly trampers and two smelly cyclists (us). We saw three more hunters (two using bows) on the track. They were all friendly though.

This was on a Saturday night in late summer with a good weather forecast. As it gets colder there will be fewer people, especially if not on the weekend.

Ahh, thanks. Apparently it was "The Roar" as of easter weekend, I think, so meant to be peak hunting season. But hut sound ok... guess we should leave the antler-hats at home, and aim to be there earlyish.

Anyone got experience at how busy the hut is over summer week-ends.

Jackson two posts up has 8 of 12 bunks occupied. Wondering if this is normal given backcountry huts are first come first served.

Looking to get in there February - March.

Yep verandah is all good, I have been in in the summer to find the hut full. Hunters can get access over Poronui station road on foot so alot tend to walk in on Friday night under torch light so it is difficult for riders to be first in on the weekend. I would suggest packing a sleeping mat. I was lucky enough to borrow one off a generous hunter to make the sleep on the floor more comfortable. Great trip well worth it!!
