How Many Fingers?

Postby Rik on Thu 9/Apr/15 11:25am

This one's been bubbling around in the mechanics thread.

So I'm interested to know how people brake. Lets keep things simple, lets just focus on the front brake and the combo you use most often.

You might want to declare your brake setup because I'm sure that has a large effect on things.

I'll start the ball rolling with the rather contentious combo of Juicy 3s and 1 finger on a 185mm rotor. works fine for me.

Up until a couple of years ago I was a 2, index and middle, probably a hangover from the v-brake era. But new gen shimanos dont have long enough levers so learnt to use just the index instead, now have more control as a result.

Index fingers only. Guide RSC's (180 front and rear) on the trail bike, and Elixir 5s (160 front and rear) on the xc bike.

I try to use one finger (the pointing one) and sometimes I use two fingers.
I don't know what type of brakes I have. Shimano somethings.

Index only. I like having a good grip on the handlebar.

M980 xtr, 203/180 on proper bike
M785 xt, 180/160 on hardtail
Juicy 5, 185/185 on the spare bike.

I have more than enough power with the Shimanos with one finger. The juicys don't have enough power to pull me up as quick as I'd like, but their overheating is way more of a limitation than the power is. I could be attempting to brake with two baked potatoes but I'd still only be using the one finger I think.

For all the good things I hear about Guides there still really is a preference on here for shimangos.
