I still can't work out if I need my heels down for the full peadl stroke, or just at the top/bottom/one, two, three oclock, four oclock rock positions?

over top, ideally, but 30* to 120* is crucial. once you're past there / 180* leg is essentially recovering, so can do what it likes.

IMHO people with their cleats too far forward end up on their toes, people with cleats about 1cm behind the ball of the foot appear to naturally pedal with their heels lower.

I shifted all my cleats back (they had been pretty much under the ball) a couple of years ago and really like the cleat position from an efficiency/power point of view as well as a stability one when standing up handling the bike.

Cleats are complicated - should mimic your natural stance (not be dead straight), and as a starting point bisect the point between 1st and 5th metatarsals.

Complicated... yes i concur. I think a lot of people with clip in shoes have never paid much attention to where their cleats are tho... (until a couple of years ago i know I had not!!).

They're also something that others fiddle with too much when looking to fix issues, when more support (orthotics) or other issues are the culprit. On top of that, there are so many old school "rules of thumb" regarding cleats that are totally wrong.

I had no known issues when I decided to shift my cleats back, it was to experiment with stuff that i had read about. Dont know if Steve Hogg is reputable or not, but the stuff he was talking about seemed to make sense to me

You probably know of the guy being in that neck of the woods??

Steve is pretty well respected, but has his own line of theories which aren't always in line with others. I've heard loads of good things about him (and am building one custom bike / frame around one of his fits for a client).

From what I could find, I figured that :D

My change of cleat placement based on his theory worked out well for me
